Born in Schuylerville, New York, he was a civil war soldier in the 4th Iowa Cavalry Company A. He was discharged at Clinton, Iowa and who came west and farmed in section 22 of Hayes township. In 1885, he employed perhaps the first person of color in this part of the state. He is buried in the Niblett Bluff Cemetery at Vinton, Louisiana.
