 Railroad Service Comes to Kiron

Shortly after leaving the Kiron depot, the train has to begin climbing out of the Otter Creek Valley to a few miles of relatively level ground before starting its long descent into the Soldier River Valley and on to the railway junction at Mondamin, Iowa. This new railroad bridge carried the train over the county road a mile west of Kiron. This picture shows a typical 4x4 steam locomotive with the coal car and three passenger cars in tow. The bridge was built in 1898-9 and stood until the mid 1950's. Several of its timbers were put to good use in the construction of the Pine Lake Bible Camp at Eldora, Iowa around 1955.
