Ferne Ann Johnson Wilson -- (1912 - 2003)

Ferne Ann Johnson Wilson was born on a farm at Kiron, Iowa, 5 April 1912, the daughter of Oscar Carl and Maggie Anderson Johnson. She was raised on the farm and received her education at Kiron, being graduated from the Kiron High School with the class of 1929. She then furthered her education for one year at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota. Following college she returned to Kiron.

On 12 May 1940, Ferne was united in marriage with Elmer W. Wilson at Kiron. Their union was blessed with two sons, Don and Dean. They made their home on the farm at Kiron where in addition to being a farm wife and mother, Ferne taught piano lessons.

Elmer died 31 May 1954 and Ferne remained on the farm until moving to Kiron in 1963 where she continued to give piano lessons. Having been blessed with abundant musical abilities Ferne enjoyed singing in groups and trios and in addition to playing the piano and organ she enjoyed playing the violin, guitar, harmonica and accordion. When time allowed Ferne loved her ministry of writing letters to missionaries, visiting ill and shut-in members of her church and community and baking. She was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church in Kiron where she graciously shared her musical talents as church organist and choir director for many years as well as serving as church custodian.

After suffering a debilitating stroke in 1986 Ferne moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where her death occurred Tuesday afternoon, 27 May 2003. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 91 years, 1 month and 22 days.

Ferne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer, one daughter, Janice Wilson Kennedy, her brother, Russell Johnson and two sisters, Bernice Wilson and Florence Hedstrom.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include four children, Don R. Wilson and wife, Dee, of Omaha, Nebraska, Dean Wilson of Lincoln, Nebraska, Genevieve and husband, Glen Ballantine of Kiron, Iowa and Jerry Wilson and wife, Maggie of Tucson, Arizona, 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, two sisters, Myrtle Larson of Eventide in Denison and Dorothy and husband Irving Mellin of Greeley, Colorado, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held at the First Baptist Church of Kiron on Saturday, 31 May 2003. Rev. Wayne Fritzinger was in charge. Vocal music was provided by Roger Anderson and Glee Crippen with Mrs. John W. Larson at the organ. Pallbearers were Keff Wilson, Trevor Wilson, Scott Wilson, Chris Kennedy, Scott College, Charles Ballantine, Steve Sawyer, Craig Kennedy, and Steve Lefczik. Interment was at the Kiron Cemetery.
