Services Held Tuesday 14 April 1953 for Verne H. Meleen
Mr. Meleen died quite suddenly at the St. Anthony hospital at Carroll Saturday, 11 April 1953. While he had been in poor health for a number of years his sudden death was a great shock to his family and many friends.
Verne H. Meleen, son of Ola M. and Minnie Meleen, was born on the farm at Kiron, Iowa 29 April 1884. This farm his parents had homesteaded.
In 1886 his parents moved to Omaha, Nebraska where they lived for five years. In 1891 they moved to Odebolt, Iowa where Verne got his schooling. When he finished school he worked for a short time in the carpenter trade with his father. Later he went to Des Moines, Iowa and after completing a commercial course, worked for some time for Younker Bros. in Des Moines.
In 1909 Verne went back to the farm where he and his father worked until the father's death. Verne remained on the farm for 33 years. On 20 December 1920 he was united in marriage to Ethel Hedstrom of Kiron, Iowa. In 1942, after his health failed, he and his wife bought a home in Odebolt where they have since lived. He passed away in the Carroll Hospital 11 April 1953.
His parents and two brothers preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife and an elderly uncle, John Meleen of California and other relatives.
Funeral services were held from the Odebolt Methodist Church at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. V. Bell. Music was rendered by Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Lindskoog. Their selections were: "Beyond the Sunset" and "My Home Sweet Home" with Mrs. W. G. Horstman at the piano.
Pallbearers were: Howard Johnson, Warren LIndberg, Gerald Hedstrom, Bueal Hedstrom, Burdette Hedstrom, and Stanley Shodeen.
Interment was in the Odebolt cemetery.
