Obituary of Niles T. Meltesen - 1991
Services were Monday for Niles T. Meltesen, 82, of Odebolt at Faith Lutheran Church in Odebolt. The Rev. Victor Johnson officiated with burial in the Hayes Township Cemetery near Arthur under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home. The Odebolt American Legion provided military graveside rites. Mr. Meltesen died April 18, 1991 at the Sac City Care Center.
Mr. Meltesen was born 7 Aug 1908 in Shennington, Wis, son of Louis and Blanche (Crawford) Meltesen. He graduated from Ames High School and Attended Iowa State University for a year. He married Florence Isabelle Bergman 23 Nov 1934. He was a tank gunner in World War II and was injured in the Battle of the Bulge. He had many different occupations: managing clothing stores in Iowa city and Ida Grove, driving a gas transport truck, opening and operating the Odebolt dairy, carpentry, postal work, sales and TV repair.
He was a member of Odebolt's Faith Lutheran church, the American Legion and the VFW. While in Iowa City he was a Boy Scout leader. Survivors include three sons and their spouses, Phillip Eugene and Gail of Rumson, N.J., Niles Thomas and Patricia of Lilburn, Ga., and James Richard and Rose of Des Moines; a daughter and her husband Mavis Elizabeth and Larry Whitaker of Oskaloosa and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Andrew; and three sisters, Caroline Heasty, Melissa Trick and Gladys Burns.
