ELLEN NELSON GUSTAFSON

Funeral services for Ellen (Nelson) Gustafson were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 26, 1981, at the Evangelical Free Church in Arthur, Iowa, with the Rev. Robert Lundberg officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Mrs. Lloyd Benson as soloist and Mrs. Ferne Wilson as organist. Casket bearers were Lloyd Benson, Raymond Johnson, Howard Anderson, Wilbur Anderson, Warren Carlson, and Bill Carlson. Burial was in the Kiron Cemetery. The Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
Ellen Violet Marie (Nelson) Gustafson was born October 25, 1907, the daughter of Gust and Emily Monson Nelson, on a farm two miles south of Kiron in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County. She was raised on the farm and received her education at the Kiron school, graduating from High School there with the class of 1926. She furthered her education, receiving college credits and a teaching certificate after attending summer school at area colleges in Audubon, Shenandoah, and Corning. She then taught in the rural schools for seven years.
On December 11, 1937, Ellen was united in marriage with Russell H. Gustafson at the Kiron Free Church parsonage and they made their home on a farm north of Kiron. Early in her life, Ellen gave her life to Christ and was baptized and joined the Kiron Evangelical Free Church. She was very active in her church and for many years served as the Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. She enjoyed using her talent of singing and sang for various occasions in the area.
Ellen was very active in her community and in the Kiron School while her children attended school there. She was instrumental in setting up the hot lunch program at the Kiron school and was active in the PTA and Music Boosters. Following the closing of the Kiron church, Ellen and her husband joined the Arthur Evangelical Free Church in June of 1980.
Due to her illness, Ellen moved to the Colonial Manor in Odebolt a few weeks ago and it was there her death occurred Tuesday afternoon, June 23, 1981. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 73 years, 7 months, and 28 days.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband Russell of Kiron; one daughter, Mari and her husband, Nick Sico of Elgin, IL; one son James Gustafson and his wife Mary of Kiron; two sisters: Minnie, Mrs. Richard Gustafson and Mrs. Myrtle Anderson, both of Kiron; one brother, Milton Nelson of Denison; four grandchildren and two step-granddaughters. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives, friends and neighbors who will remember her cheerful nature and happy spirit.
