We are indebted to Alvin Winquist for the following obituary which was taken from a South Dakota paper:
Axel Peterson, former Kiron man many years, late a resident of Big Springs, S. D., for over 30 years, passed away at his home Christmas Eve, following a stroke which he suffered on Monday of last week and later suffered two more strokes. He could not speak after the first day of his illness although not confined to his bed all of the time, but gradually grew weaker until death released him from his suffering.
Funeral services were held at his home and then at the Big Springs Baptist church Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. R. A. Dahlquist in charge. Interment was made in the family lot in the Big Springs cemetery. Mrs. Conrad Johnson and Mrs. Milford Carlson sang two duets at the service.
Axel Robert Peterson was born in Misterhult Socken, Sweden, May 8, 1867, and at the age of one, came to America with his parents, locating on a farm near Kiron, Iowa, where he spent his early life, enduring the hardships of the pioneers. In 1907 the family moved to Big Springs community and he made his home here continuously since that time. He was a quiet unassuming man who deeply loved his home and dear ones, was a good neighbor and was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed the fellowship with the people of the community and although not a member of any church, he was willing to do his share in the building and other programs in connection with the church. He never married and since the death of his parents made his home with his sister, Sarah, and brother, Emil, who together with one brother-in-law, Albert Lieff, two nieces and a nephew, other relatives and a host of friends. He had attained the age of 70 years, 7 months and 16 days.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were, Alvin, Vernie and Jubel Winquist, Victor Youngquist and Robert Sjogren of Kiron, Iowa.
