Dr. Smith, China Missionary Died 20 January 1953 in Omaha
Dr. E. M. Smith passed away at Omaha Tuesday morning January 20, 1953 after a lingering illness. Dr. and Mrs. Smith well known in Kiron and this community are returned Missionaries from China, where they served under the Presbyterian Board for more than forty years. Since returning home a couple of years ago they have made their home in Omaha. Mrs. Smith is a sister of Mrs. Henry Frahm and Minnie Cronquist of Kiron. Minnie Cronquist left Tuesday to be with Mrs. Smith in Omaha.

Dr. E. Smith Dies After Long Illness
The Rev. Elleroy Murray Smith for 34 years a Presbyterian missionary in China died Jan 28 at his home in Omaha. Dr. Smith, who came home from China in 1950 suffering from a heart ailment has been on the inactive missionary list and was to have retired on his 65th birthday June 23.
Born in Minneapolis the son of the Rev. and Mrs. I. G. Smith, Dr. Smith was graduated from Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, and from the Omaha Theological Seminary in 1916. In 1939 Buena Vista awarded him the Doctor of Divinity degree. He also did graduate work at Union Theological Seminary, New York.
During his seminary course Dr. Smith was also an instructor at Buena Vista College. In 1916 he was appointed a missionary to China under the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and was assigned to the East China Mission. He was engaged in evangelistic work. Later for five years he was executive secretary of the Presbyterian East China Mission.
In 1916 Dr. Smith was married to Mabelle C. Conquist of Kiron who survives.
