Nils August Swanson was born Oct 23rd, 1859 in Misterhult, Kalmar Lan, Sweden. In the early part of his life he was a sailor. In 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Sophia Peterson. They came to this country, and during the first five years worked at various trades.
In 1892 he started farming at Kiron, Iowa, and continued there with this work until 1900, when he moved to Union County, SD. After farming here one year, they sold the farm they had bought and went back to Sweden, where his wife died 17 Jan 1922. Alone he came back to the United States in Feb 1926 to spend his remaining days with his near relatives. Not being in the best of health lately he went to Omaha and submitted to an operation, on April 3rd, and five days later, he died there, on the morning of April 8th, 1927, at the age of 67 years, 5 months and 16 days.
During the latter part of his career as a seaman, he was converted, and became a member of a Baptist church in Stockholm. After coming to this county, he united with the First Swedish Baptist church in Kiron, Iowa. He was an honest , upright man, a loving husband, and brother, and a friend to children. He is survived by two brothers, Swan John and Charles O. Swanson, and sister, Mathilda, Mrs. Lawrence Anderson of Lake Lillian, Minn.
The body was brought here from Omaha and funeral services were conducted by Rev. B. L. Carlton in the Big Springs Baptist church Monday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in the Big Springs cemetery.
Those from a distance to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs Lawrence Anderson and Mrs. Albert Rodelieur of Lake Lillian, Minn, and Maurice, Chas. and Robt. Sjogren of Kiron, Iowa.
