John W. Winquist was born on a farm in Otter Creek Township near Kiron, Iowa, December 21, 1919, the son of Vernie and Lena Linquist Winquist. He attended the rural schools and was graduated from the Kiron High School with the Class of 1937.
During World War II, from November of 1942 until his discharge in October of 1945, John served his country in the United States Army Air Force. He was attached to the 817th Medical Air Evacuation Squadron in the European Theater and served as a Surgical Technician in the battles and compaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Upon his discharge he returned to Kiron and began his farming career on the farm one mile south of Kiron. On March 13, 1949, John was united in marriage with Aldene Hollrah at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. They made their home on the farm at Kiron and their union was blessed with three sons, Steven, alan and David. In conjunction with farming John owned and operated the Kiron Locker for twelve years and was employed as an Emergency Medical Technician with the Crawford County Ambulance Service for five years. In the fall of 1977 John and Aldene moved to Sac City where he was employed with the Sac County Ambulance Service for ten years before returning to Kiron in February of 1992 where he had since resided.
John was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kiron, American Legion Post 383, Kiron, Iowa and the Sac City Lions Club. For three years he was a member of the Denison Barbershop Happiness express and through the years sang solos at many weddings and funerals. He was a loving husband and father and will be remembered for his great love of children.
John died Sunday afternoon, November 23, 1997 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 77 years, 11 months and 2 days. Including his parents, John was preceded in death by twin grandchildren, Nolan John and Anna Roene Winquist and his father-in-law, Carl Hollrah.
Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife of over 48 years, Aldene Winquist of Kiron, Iowa, three son, Steven Winquist and his wife, Jana of Kiron, Iowa, Alan Winquiat of Edina, Minnesota and David Winquist of Chaska, Minnesota, one sister, Mildred and her husband, Harold Cooper of Corona, California, one brother, Dwight Winquist and his wife, Beverly of Kiron, Iowa, his mother-in-law, Anna Hollrah of Dunlap, Iowa, brother-in-law, Vaernon Hollrah and wife, Leona of Charter Oak, Iowa, brother-in-law,Don Hollrah and wife, Donna of Rogers, Arkansas, sister-in-law, Evelyn and her husband, Freemon Meyer of Sun City, California, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:0000 A.M., Wednesday, November 26, 1997 at the First Baptist Church in Kiron, Iowa with the Rev. Larry W. Odle officiating. Vocal soloists were Wayne Lindskoog singing "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" and Gwen Ecklund singing "How Great Thou Art". Congregational hymns included "Because He Lives" and "Rock Of Ages, Cleft For Me". Mrs. John W. Larson served as organist. Honorary bearers included Julie Peterson, James Hollrah and Lyle Woodward. Casket bearers were Kent Hollrah, Jom Walters, Conwell Larson, Arlan Ecklund, Sydney Winquist and Merlen Noess. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 383, Kiron, Iowa. Interment was in the Kiron Cemetery at Kiron, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa was in charge of the arrangements.
