Aedan ordained by St Columba Killed 608 Aidan, the first independent king of Scottish Dalriada, was also the 1st Christian king of Great Britain (excluding Ireland), succeeding to the throne upon the death of King Conall in 574/ As well as being a direct descendant of Fergus, Aedan had the inestimable advantage of Columba's backing. The inauguration was a composite of heathen and Christian rites, as the new king sat upon the Stone of Scone, brought from Ireland by Fergus 70 years before, and the priest laid his hands upon his head, blessing him as if he were being ordained. At the same time that Scottish Dalriada was declared independent of Ireland (in the Convention of Drumceatt with Columba's participation the Scottish Dalriada was declared free of all tribute to Ireland and its king, Aedan, was declared independent), the little kingdom, by now a power in Alba, also declared its freedom from the control of the Pictish king, Brude. This was the beginning of the Gaelic Scotland. In 842 the whole country was united under the aegis of the Dalriadan kings and Aedan's descendants ruled until 1285 when the last one died and the ancient Irish blood-line passed maternally to the family of Stewart. In 573 we find Gwendolew leading the pagan party against the Christians under Rhydderch Hael and Aedan of Dalriada. The result was a great victory for militant Christianity at Ardderyd in that year. An earlier Alpin was King of Dalriada abt 736 DSH Alpin ruled the Picts happily for 16 years TC Dalriada (or Dal Riata) an irish people called "Scoti" occupied part of N E Ireland and colonies of them settled in Kintyre and mid Argyll prob- ably abt 500. Dalriada, the name of their homeland, was transferred to the new settlement and as the kingdom of Dalriada it maintained its existence, sometimes rather tenuously, until Kennth Mac Alpin united it to Pictland.

Arnulf and Pippin were the chief advisors of the young Dagobart I in the 620s: Arnulf was a major bishop as well as a great aristocrat, and Pippin was Mayor of the Palace in Austrasia. The mayor was in effect the king's prime minister, with influence on royal policy and, in all probablilty, access to the royal treasury. Pippin held the post until his death in 640.
