HHC page 74 Honey Creek - New Providence Church. In 1852 the first religious service was held in Providence Township in the home of James Tulburt. Families in the first meeting who had come from Yadkin County, North Carolina, were Reece, Dobbins, Tulbert, Southard, Thornton, Baker, Hobson + Dillion. In 1851 a small company of 44 Quakers left North Carolina to begin the long trek to Iowa. Among those brave people weree William Hobson, a minister, Levi Reece and wife, Joseph Dillon and family, Samuel Dillon and wife. After a period of rest with friends in southeast Iowa, the men left their wives and children to forage onward to the Honey Creek area, where they hastily erected leannn-to shelters for themselves and their horses against coming winter winds.
