From the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle Edmund met an untimely end at the hand of an assassin on 26 May 946. ... A certain robber named Leofa, whom he had banished for his crimes, returning after six years' absence, totally unexpected, was sitting, on the feast of St. Auugustine.. among the guests at Puckle church in Gloucestershire... This, while the others were eagerly carousing, was perceived by the king alone; when, hurried with indignation and impelled by fate, he leapt from the table, caught the robber by the hair, and dragged him to the floor; but he, secretly drawing a dagger from its sheath, plunged it with all its force into the breast of the king as he lay upon him. OBRA page 31-33 Ethelred, son of King Edgar, and brother of Edward, was consecrated king before all the nobles of England at Kinston. An evil omen, as St Dunstan interpreted it, had happened to him in his infancy. For at his baptism he made water in the font; whence the man of God predicted the slaughter of the English people that would take place in his time. - Henry of Huntingdon The chief feature of Ethelred's reign was the renewed incursions by Danish raiders. a solution was adopted for controlling the Danes by paying them tribute, and though Ethelred was not the first to propose such a policy the collection of Danegeld is indelibly associated with his name... In Nov 1022... the king ordered to be slain all the Danish men who were in England....Ethelred's reward for this was the wrath of King Sweyn Forkbeard of Denmark whose sister had been a victim of the massacre. By 1013, when Sweyn came to England with his son Cnut, Ethelred's fortunes had reached a low ebb. His wife, Emma of Normandy, retreated with her two sons Edward and Alfred to France and Ethelred followed soon after. Sweyn's death in 1014 brought a reprieve... During the spring King Ethelred came home to his own people and he was gladly received by them all. - The Anglo-Saxon Chroniclespouse: , Ealdgyth (Aelfgyfu) (*0965 - 1052)WTCTable 3 Ethelred II king of England, 978-1016

There had been an Irish settlement in western Scotland from the early 3rd century, when the family of Carbery Riada, escaping famine in Munster, migrated to the north of Ireland, to settle in County Antrim and thence across the sea to Argyle in SW Scotland. In both they established themselves permanently as the Dalriada (Riada's portion). The tiny Scottish colony languished until 503, when three brothers, Fergus, Angus + Lorne, direct descendants of Carbery Riada, led a group across the sea from Irish Delriada +, meeting little opposition, took over a much larger piece of land. Fergus was their 1st king; his descendants ultimately became kings of all Scotland, and from them derived, through the Stewarts, the present royal family of Great Britain. FOI p 153-4spouse:The Scots could...trace their king's linage with some authority back to a Fergus, the son of Erc, who had come from Ireland to settle with his people in Dalriada (Argyll) around the year 500. But a far greater antiquity than that was claimed for the royal line, and for the Scots themselves, in remarkable flights of fancy... It was related that the Scots derived their origin from Gaythelas (whence, allegedly, GaelA) son of a King of Greece, who went to Egypt in the days of Moses. He married the epoymous Scota, dau of Pharaoh, and led his family from Egypt to Spain. From that country several colonies of their descendants went to Ireland, the last of them under Simon Brek, and under Simon's grandson, so the story went on, the Scots passed over into northern Britain and gave the name of Scotia to that part of the island. In the year 330 BC the Scots who had thus settled in Scotland elected as their King Fergus, son of Ferchard, who was reckoned Fergus I and from whom the dynasty was dated. Under the rule of the line of Fergus the Scots remained in Scotland for 7 centuries. In AD 360, however, after King Eugenius (Ewen) had been slain by the Picts and Britons, the Scots, under his brother, Ethodius and his nephew Erc, were driven back to Ireland. Then in the 5th century they returned under Fergus, son of Erc and reoccupied Argyll. From Fergus, son of Erc, the succession continued down to Kenneth, son of Alpin, who united the Picts with the Scots under his rule, in a kingdom called Alba (the territory north of the Forth + Clyde.) Some versions of the legend related that the Scots had in all their wanderings taken with them a sacred stone, which according to one account, had been the pillow on which the patriach Jacob had slept when he had his miraculous dream at Bethel. On this stone, sometimes called a marble seat, the kings of the Scots had always been installed. from Scottish Kings by Gordon Donaldson NY John Wiley + Sons, Inc. 1967 p10.
FOI page 163 Aidan, the first independent king of Scottish Dalriada, was also the first Christian King in Great Britain (excluding Ireland) succeeding to the throne upon the death of King Conall in 574... A direct descendant of Fergus... This was the beginning of Faelic Scotland. In 842 the whole country was united under the Aegis of the Dolriadan kings + Aidan's descendants ruled until 1285, when the last one died and the ancient Irish blood line passed maternally to the family of the Stuarts.
