    THOMAS GAY, SR. was born on Coleackle, county of Cork, Ireland, January 17, 1811, and died at his home in
    Riley township, Clinton county, Mich., January 15, 1899. Had he lived two days longer, he would have been
    88 years old. At the age of 26 years he married Miss Mary A. Allen, through which union seven children were
    born, of which number three sons and one daughter survive him.  They are: Charles Gay of Labett county, Kansas;
    John Gay of Fowler; Henry Gay of the township of Bengal, Clinton county; and one duaghter residing in Rochester,
    N. Y. In 1840 Mr. Gay came to America which his family and settled in Rochester, NY, where he remained eleven
    years, during which time he assisted in digging and putting through the Welland canal in Canada. In the year 1851
    he came with his family to Clinton county and settled in Bengal township, upon the west half of the southwest quarter
    of section 33, and through diligent and earnest labor and perseverance made the dense wilderness give place to a beautiful
    and productive farm. In the year 1858 his wife sickened and died on the 20th day of September of that year, and was buried
    in the Boughton cemetery. He was then left a widower with four children. Later he united in marriage to Mrs. Jane Lanning,
    and to them were born five children, two sons and three daughters. Two of the daughters, after they had been
    married, died and were buried in the Boughton cemetery. About 20 years ago [1879] Mr. Gay sold his farm in Bengal to
    Henry Mankey, and removed to Riley township, where he had since resided. ______________________ More About THOMAS GAY: Burial: Boughton Cemetery, Riley Twp., Clinton Co., MI Cause of Death: General decay More About MARY ALLEN: Name 2: Mary A. Mr. Gay, son of thomas and mary Allen Gay, was born June 8, 1851 in Rochester, New York, and came to Clinton county at the age of three. He was one of a large family of children, all of whom have preceded him with the exception of one sister, Mrs. Herbert Temple of Detroit. His early education was received in the district school of Bengal and the Maple rapids public school, conducted by former Senator Mudge. After teaching for several years, Mr. gay entered Hillsdale College, from which he graduated in 1874. After leaving college, he taught school in various parts of Clinton county, including 10 years in Westphalia. In 1889 he entered into partnership with William Love and together they conducted a lumberyard in Fowler and later established another yard at Portland. Upon dissolving this partnership in 1894, Mr. Gay conducted his own lumber yard in Fowler until 1906, retiring from active business at that time. He was married in November, 1891 to Evy Weitzel who survives him, together with one sister and a large number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Gay lived a happy life and were very congenial together. Since retiring from business they traveled extensively and were interested in all community affairs and activities. The funeral service was conducted from the residence in Fowler, Tuesday at three o'clock. The officiating minister was Rev. T. S. Cleaver of St. Johns and interment was at the mausoleum at Mt. Rest cemetery, St. Johns. Mr. Gay was a man who was highly respected and esteemed by everyone. He was a student, well read and cultured. Those who knew him spoke highly of him. He was a man whose word could always be depended upon. He always enjoyed a good joke and had a rare sense of humor. In the passing of Mr. Gay, Clinton county has lost one of its pioneer educators and business men. His passing will be lamented by all who knew him. ________________________ At the time of Thomas Sr's death (1899) John lived in Fowler, Clinton Co., MI COD: Pyetitis Retired Lumber Dealer More About JOHN GAY: Cause of Death: Pyetitis Notes for EVA WEITZEL: 1920 Census Dallas Twp., Clinton Co., MI John Evy ______________________ Obituary...
