Martin Gay of Boston Massachusetts
Submitted by Andy Graybeal
Martin Gay, son of the Rev. Ebenezer Gay, was a
metal smith and loyalist at the time of the Revolution. He and other loyalists in
1776 evacuated Boston with two of his children on a flotilla of British
ships commanded by General Howe for Nova Scotia. He left his second wife behind
with some of his family behind in charge of their property to protect it from
confiscation. Ironically, this property became the site of the Revere Copper
Company. Gay's own business by that time was managed by an employee, later
partner, who occupied another part of the building.
While in exile in Nova Scotia, Martin Gay's
daughter, Mary married Rev William Black, a missionary of John Wesley, later to
become bishop.
Martin Gay eventually returned to Boston after some
eleven years to live in retirement. He is buried in the Old Granary burial
ground in Boston.
Ebenezer Gay, an early graduate of Harvard, was the founder of the Unitarian Church in New England and was married to Jerusha Bradford, descendent of the Mayflower governor William Bradford. Ebenezer descended from Nathaniel, Nathaniel and John Gay of Dedham, Mass.
My great grandmother Amelia Seabury Black. I
have in my possession the family bible of Martin Gay Black, her father and the
eldest son of the bishop and Mary Gay Black.
