M. E. GAY FAMILY AND RELATIVES

Cullman Co., Al. Gay Family

by Anna Faye Gay-Morris Hite

The following information on Montgomery Estes Gay was sent in by Anna Hite. Anyone who might be connected to this family or who have additions or corrections may contact her at Email.

INTRODUCTION
This history contains history mostly on the Montgomery Estes Gay descendents. There is some information on other descendents of James Gay but it is sketchy at this point. I wanted to go ahead and include what has been gathered so far. Some of you may be able to help fill in the gaps. This is slow work and I still have a great deal of research to do.
The information included in this history was gathered from individuals in the family, from memory, from the Census, Civil War records, land records and other records in the archives and from tombstones at Flint Creek, New Hope No. 2 and Bethsada Churches in Cullman County. Much of the information on the older Gays was obtained from Archie Gay, Scottie Sizemore and Hobson Morris. Lydia Parris Sizemore was most helpful with information on the John James Gay descendents. Jerry Gay obtained some of the tombstone information at Flint Church. Every effort has been made to include only correct information. In spite of these efforts, some errors may be present.
Please excuse any errors you find and let me know what they are so corrections may be made before a book is published. I plan to continue to search for information on our ancestor, James Gay, his offspring and his forebears.

0: JAMES GAY
James Gay, DOB 7.20.1827; DOD 2.28.1890. (Tombstone Information) Married Penelope Pope, DOB July, 1830 (1900 Federal Census information); DOD 10.15.1905. (Tombstone Information).  Both James Gay and Penelope Pope Gay are buried at Flint Creek Church, Vinemont, Alabama, in Cullman County. According to the 1880 Cullman County Census, James Gay gave his age as 59 on his last birthday prior to 6.1.1880. That would make his birth year 1822, not 1827, as listed on his tombstone. Also, an incorrect birth year, 1835, is given on Penelope’s tombstone. She stated to the 1900 census taker that she was born in July,1830. The year 1830 seems more logical as she was married in 1846 and her first child was born in 1847.
A story told by his grandchildren is that James Gay was single when he moved from South Carolina to Tremble, Alabama. According to the 1880 Cullman County Census, James Gay was born in Tennessee, his father in North Carolina, his mother in Tennessee. Penelope A. Gay was born in Alabama, her father in Georgia and her mother in Kentucky. James Gay may have moved from Tennessee (and not from South Carolina) to Alabama. James and Penelope were married in Morgan County, Alabama. Their marriage license was issued August 10, 1846. (Source of information:  Minter, Elbert J. Marriages of Morgan County, Alabama, 18 18-1896). I am sending for a copy of their marriage record.
In the 1860, Blount County, Alabama Census, James Gay listed his age as 36 and the value of his Real Estate was $500. The value of his personal estate was $400. In the l86O census Penelope Gay gave her age as 30.
James Gay served in the Civil War as a Private in Company B, 5th Regiment of the Alabama Volunteers. He owned a section of land in Cullman County (family tradition). Penelope Pope Gay drew a widow’s pension because of James Gay’s Civil War service. James E. Pope and John W. Pope made sworn statements in 1900, about James Gay’s service. Most likely they were Penelope’s brothers.
At that time Penelope listed her Real Estate as life interest in 60 acres with value of $50 and personal property (household and kitchen furniture) valued at $40. Penelope was living with her youngest child, Elias Gay, in 1900.
James and Penelope Gay had 14 children according to her statement to the census taker in 1900. She said that 10 were living in 1900. I have found the names of 12 children; John James, Sally, Sarah, Ellen, Mary, Taylor, Soloman, Adaline, Margaret, Bird, Huldy and Elias Gay. According to Lydia Parris Sizemore, one of the daughters had a daughter named Tillie Mae who married a Hale. Another daughter had a daughter named Lyma. The names of the children and the descendents known by the writer is given next.
1. John James Gay, DOB 11.17.1848 ; DOD 5.20.1930; Married Melinda Jane Oden, DOB 3.10.1856; DOD 2.7.1925. (Tombstone Information)
The wedding was performed 1.31.1876 by William Stringer, Morgan County, Alabama, Magistrate. Brides permission by A.M.B. Oden.
Melinda Jane Oden Gay was the daughter of Anderson (Andrew) Miller Bailey Oden (b. 7.22.1819; d. 2.17.1893)

Oden Lineage
The Oden lineage has been traced back to the Revolutionary War. I am including the lineage here. Anderson (Andrew) Bailey Oden was born in Lawrence Cove, Morgan County, Alabama. He married Laura E. Crunk (Crump) on 1.29.1845. Laura E. Crunk: DOB 10.22.1826; DOD 12.24.1906.
Anderson (Andrew) Miller Bailey Oden was the child of Thomas B. Oden, (b. 1798, in South Carolina and d. 1848 in Alabama) and Nancy Mary Miller Oden (b. 1798 in Virginia and died in Alabama). Thomas and Nancy Oden were married circa l818.
Thomas B. Oden was the child of Hezekiah Oden Jr., (b. 1777 at Edgefield County, South Carolina and died 1848 in Lawrence Cove, Morgan County, Alabama) and Mary Terrell Oden (b. 1789 in Georgia and died in Alabama in 1849). Hezekiah, Jr. and Mary Terrell Oden were married circa 1797.
Hezekiah Oden Sr. was born in 1735 in Maryland and died in Edgefield, South Carolina after 8.3.1797 or 1798, which was the date of his will. Hezekiah Sr. was married to Lurane (Lurany) Oden who died in Edgefield, S.C after 2.19.1805. Hezekiah and Lurany Oden had 6 children, John, Andrew, Peter, Thomas B. H., Hezekiah, Jr., and Dorcus Oden. Hezekiah Oden, Sr. assisted in establishing American Independence during the Revolutionary War. He was Collector of Provisions, Defender of Fort and Delegate to a Continental Congress. (Source of information; Alberta Gay Morris’ Application for Membership to the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Her National DAR membership number is 660113.
My number is 704147. Any of her descendents, her siblings’ descendents can gain access to the DAR using her national number. My descendents can do the same thing. You would need to provide documentation showing the link, such as birth certificates and marriage certificates.)

Notes for SYLVIA GENEVA GAY:

                                                       Our Three Year Old

                                       Her smile was radiant sunshine,

                                                       A Glistening, gleaming gold;

                                       Her thoughts were pretty violets,

                                                       Our winsome three year old.

                                       Her eyes were midnight pansies,

                                                       Her wee hands lillie fair;

                                       The golden hue of daisies

                                                       Was shimmering in her hair.

                                       Her laughter was the music

                                                       Of a clear and rippling brook;

                                       Her way was the shy coquerry

                                                       Of a still and shady nook.

                                       Her dimpled knees, the shell pink

                                                       Of apple blossoms sweet;

                                       The coy, elusive maybells,

                                                       Her dainty little feet.

                                       Her fancies were the sunbeams,

                                                       The rose, her heart of gold;

                                       Her fragile dreams, the jasmine;

                                                       God took our three-year-old
