Notes for William Gay
Records before 1700 destroyed. This was done during the English
civil War. However if we take
thirty years as a generation this would put his DOB at about 60
years before his grandson
William who was baptised 29th January 1765. All Members of the
"Gay Family" Born in Wooton
Fitz-Paine were baptised in the village church which has stood
here since the Twelth Century.
The font which is still there dates from this time. The Church
has no dedication. it would
have been The Lord of The Manor's Private Church.
This is the first record that appears of the Family in the
Village.
They lived in a cottage named Guppy cottage which was part of
the Farm named Guppy Farm. this
was confirmed by the Tyhe map.
This Village is named in the Domesday Book. It's name Wooton is
derived from either Watery or
Wooded. As the situation in which it is found is both, the name
fits it very well. The
"Fitz- Paine was added when the Manor was owned by a
Fitz-Paine.
