Census 1860 Bond Co IL, 1880, 1900, 1910.
When his father William Anthony Harned did not return from California, David
Benson Harned crossed the plains with a team of oxen looking for him. David
did not find his father William Anthony Harned, but remained in the gold fields
until 1854. David took the Yankee Blade home but it was shipwrecked, and he
survived overnight until a passing ship picked him up.

Story told by granddaughter --
"David Benson Harned accidentally shot himself while cleaning a gun.
Witnessed by his four year old son James Wesley Harned. This same person
James Wesley Harned was forced by his grandfather, John Wesley Harned to
say that his mother Nettie Bilyeau Harned killed her husband. James Wesley
reportedly never knew what happened to his mother. James Wesley Harned's
daughter reported this story as well as the fact that Nettie Bilyeau
Harned, wife of David Benson Harned, died in a mental institution."
