Clarendon College,"Harned Sisters Fine Arts Auditorium", Clarendon, Texas
"They were quiet, self-effacing people--genteel, cultured, soft-spoken,
reserved." This is the way Mrs. Harned and her two young daughters, Ida and
Etta, were described by the pioneer citizens of Clarendon when the three ladies
moved here in the early part of the century. The sisters operated a millinery
shop for a number of years and gradually acquired extensive real estate
property. Ida died in 1959, leaving her sister, Etta, with no immediate
family. When Etta died on Dec 29, 1965, she bequeathed an estate of a third
of a million dollars to Clarendon College. Only the future can determine the
far reaching effects of this magnanimous gesture of the members of a
pioneer family who wanted to make a lasting investment in the educational
progress of their community."
