There were only three pictures of aircraft in the album all apparently dated during the WW I years.   I believe all were taken at Fort Sam Houston that was the site of early army aircraft research.  Two of the pictures were of crashed air ships.  The one showed to the left appears to be pretty badly damaged, but since it did not burn it is likely the pilot survived. The second crashed plane was pictured previously on the "Times Are Changing" index page.  Click here for the enlargement of this picture.

The picture to the right is interesting because it is thought to be the Wright, Type B, Military Flyer delivered to Fort Sam Houston in 1910.  I think this picture also was made at Fort Sam Houston during the World War I period at which time it was six or seven years old and quite the worst for wear.  It would appear that Harold Henry Arnold and other members of the family were visiting friends or relatives at the base and thereby obtained access to the aircraft.  There is a soldier and three civilians on the craft plus another person taking the picture.  This does not speak too well for Army Post security during the war.

Though aircraft and flying did not figure prominently in family life style at this time, these pictures show that they were aware of and  interest in the new machines and the future potential of the technology involved..
