Scenes around the camp kids There were many kids at the 1909 Medina River camp. In the picture below there are a half dozen in the water on the first row plus at least 4 more younger children with their parents on the bar in the background. In the picture on the right they are in some sort of line. Thirteen year old Harold Henry Arnold is in the lead. Perhaps this is the Chow line?

Fishing They fished with long cane poles with out a reel. There was only a line approximately as long as the pole. Near the loose end was a lead sinker and the hook was at the very end. A cork might have been used to vary the depth of the hook below the water. The hook was baited most often with minnows netted from the river, and sometimes with worms. An effective method for catching catfish was to set trout lines that would extend across the river from one bank to the other with bated hooks about 18 inches apart. In a good productive pool many relatively large catfish might be caught over night. This was the best chance for the large party to have a fried fish dinner while in camp. The second picture is from an unidentified camp on the Guadalupe River near Kerrville. This site is some 75 miles from San Antonio. The party must have traveled to Kerrville by either train or perhaps by Automobile, but to get to this site from San Antonio by buggy would have required at least two days and more likely three. The Kerrville picture illustrates the use of cane poles for river fishing. It was quite a problem to avoid tree limbs, etc when retrieving a fish that was hooked on the line. The final picture entitled, "One Lonely Cat" was from the 1911 trip. The size of the fish is obscured in the shadow between the two younger Boys. Harold Henry Arnold is on the left in the back row. |

Groupies
The last three group pictures are all from the 1909 Medina River camp. The adults seem to have pass on the opportunity to swim leaving this activity for the children. The water does appear to be rather low. Remember this trip was the first of September which of course followed the driest month of the year. Perhaps that had something to do with their decision to let the opportunity for a swim pass by. The 13 year old Harold Henry Arnold appears in both of the pictures below. In both of the pictures he is wearing knickers with long socks giving the appearance of boots. In his jacket he seems overly dressed for the probable warm late summer temperature and .in comparison with the others.
