I'm still sorting thru my many years of research-thought the following
might be of interest to Hollinger researchers.
HOLLINGER Family. The Hollinger family of Adams and Franklin Counties is
descended from (1) Jacob Hollinger, who is said to have been the first
of the name to emigrate to Pennsylvania. His name is found is found on
the  list of Palantines on the ship "Harle," of which Captain Ralph
Harle, which arrived at Philidelphia from Rotterdam, Sept. 1, 1736.
Another Jacob Hollinger came on the ship "Virtuous Grace," Capt. John
Bull, which arrived Sept. 24, 1737. It is probable that the former of
these was the Hollinger ancestor, as he brought with him his wife and
children, some accounts saying that he was the father of twenty-four
sons and daughters. The "Harle," on the voyage of 1736, was noteworthy
as a family ship. It brought over three hundred and eighty-eight
immigrants of whom one hundred and fifty-six were men, sixty-five women
and one hundred and sixty-seven boys and girls. something is known of
the descendants of fourteen of Jacob's sons. There names were:
1. Phillip
2. Christian
3. Jacob
4. Daniel
5. Nicholas
6. John
7. Christopher (11)
8. Thomas
9. Joseph
10. Tobias
11. Adam
12. David
13. George
14 Valentine
(other children were not listed on this  page).

             M. W. Babb

        From:

This is in response to an e-mail from Linda of 8/26/99.  I saved it because
she asked if anyone could place an obituary of a Mary Hollinger, Mrs. M. W.
Babb.  I knew that name from somewhere and have just come across what I had
in my files to add to what Shirley had posted.

This is from "History of Stark County Ohio" edited by Wm Henry Perrin, 1881
page 708 - (typed in total)
"WILLIAM HOLLINGER, farmer; P.O. Massillon; born in Franklin Co., Penn, May
9, 1824, being the fourth of a family of seven children.  His parents, John
and Catharine Hollinger, were natives of the Keystone State. Abraham
Hollinger was the grandsire of William; he was a native of Germany, and
emigrated to Pennsylvania. He had four sons and two daughters - Abraham,
Jacob, William, Isaac, John, Barbara, and one name not known. Jacob was 9
years of age when his parents came to this State, locating in Perry
Township,
and purchased 46 acres of land. He died shortly after his arrival in this
county, leaving the family of children in charge of his wife.  Of the
number
who grew up were Polly, Mrs. M. W. Babb, now of Defiance County; Samuel has
settled in Nebraska, and engage in farming; Josiah, in Petty Township;
Peter,
Hiram, Joseph, and Lucinda, deceased.  His mother died in August, 1874, age
72. William remained at home until April 15, 1855, when he became the
husband
of Martha, daughter of John Armstrong. She was born in Tuscarawas Township
on
the southwest quarter of Sec. 25, in 1834. For two years after his marriage
he lived on land of Jacob Umbenhower. In April, 1858, he moved on the farm
he
now owns, having saved $1,200, which he invested in land, buying at first
60
acres, which belonged to Dwight. He now has 82 acres, of land which is
favorably located, with elegant house and barn thereon, all recently
erected,
the house being one of the finest farmhouses in the township. Has seven
children, who are William H., Ada F., Harry, Lizzie N., Minnie M., Emmet H,
and Eveline. Ada is now teacher in the Union School at Massillon, and is a
lady of artistic taste. Children unmarried and at home."

That last sentence is as it appears in the bio - assuming it meant all of
them were at home.  Typed as printed including the punctuation.

Hope this helps someone.  I could not connect them to the Hans Jacob group
even the ones in Franklin Co.  If someone places them, please post. Thanks

Sonnie

A small family cemetery, situated in a farmer's field. Most of the burials are from the Hawbecker Family. The cemetery is in fair condition. Most of the burials took place in the 1850's and 1860's.

I walked this cemetery on Sep 29, 2003.

[PAFRANKL] Hollinger-Keip farm at Roadside

My ancestor, Philip Hollinger, d. 1812, is said to have been buried on the Hollinger-Keip farm at Roadside in Washington Twp. I know the location of Roadside, but would appreciate it if anyone could pinpoint for me the location of the Hollinger-Keip farm. Thanks for any help. Mike Rohrer

Subject: [BRE] Brethren 1760-1770 Carlisle, Shippenburg, Chambersburg PA

Dear cousins,

My ancestor, Jacob Schmucker, spent some time in the Carlisle, Shippenburg, Chambersburg area of PA in the late 1760s-early 1770s and I wondered if there were any Brethren conclaves in the area. This area was Cumberland County (now Franklin and Cumberland) and is along current highway 81 which goes from Carlisle down to Hagerstown, Maryland.

I realize there won't be any records fro the time period; I just wondered if I could narrow down the area a little more in an effort to track his movements and his friends. Or if a lot of settlers moved from the area to Somerset County, PA.

I have one clue that he knew the Horners of Waynesboro, or at least Adam Horner, who appeared as a witness at his son's wedding (from an article in the Laurel Messenger, Somerset Co). The following is a cut n paste from Brian Cartwright's western Pennsylvania families on Rootsweb, and he says it is excerpted from Storey's 1906 "History of CambriaCounty", Jack Horner Bells's 1980 "Horner Patriots" and articles byJack Horner Bell in the 'Laurel Messenger', the newsletter of theSomerset County Historical Society:

"During and after the Revolutionary war, the Horners prospered andmultiplied. With the end of the war, peace had finally descended uponthe Cumberland Valley, the menace of the Indians having receded. Duringthe 1780's, the Horners continued to increase their land holdings, andin the latter half of the decade John Horner, Jr., increased theacreage of his esate, known as "Hornhead", located near Waynesboro andstill farmed to this day.

During this time, the German religioussects had roving preachers whose circuits took them into the westernwilds. Those "men of God" returned with stories of the vast areas ofvirgin timber and fertile ground just waiting to be taken. The sprit ofadventure was aroused and more and more early Americans were packing upand moving westward.

John Horner, Jr. had become a well-to-do man in the Cumberland Valley, however, he obviously had decided as early as 1796 to follow his eldestson, Adam, into "The Promised Land" of Somerset County because he beganselling off his properties in Franklin County. On May 7, 1796, he andhis wife, Susannah, sold "Hornhead" to Philip Hollinger for thirteenhundred pounds, an enormous amount of money in those days.

Atthe time of the first census in 1790, all the Horners were in FranklinCounty. John, Jr. had a family of eight sons and two daughters, many ofthem fully grown. Abraham had four sons and a daughter, and Solomon hadseven children.

By the time of the second census in 1800,John, Sr. and all of his sons, with the exception of Elias, were livingin Somerset County. The westward migration was made in severalincrements with one or more families moving every year or so. The sameConestoga wagons likely ferried back and forth, serving eachcontingent. Everything they needed had to be brought with them. Tools, cooking utensils, stoves, tables, chairs, beds and bedding, barrels offood, and needs for next years crops all had to be brought along.Anything forgotten or broken had to be improvised, borrowed fromdistant neighbors, or done without...."

Thanks for any information, opinions or other speculation,

Suzy
