The origins of the Camber family aren't yet discovered before the children of John Henry Camber were born in Vermont and Québec in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Vermont vital records include the births of five of the six eldest children, all of which list their parents as John H. Camber and Data. For many years I believed Data to be his wife's maiden surname, but it wasn't until recently, with the publication of the Drouin Collection, that I began to notice that Data was often used as an abbreviation for Camber descendants who were baptized Theodata (also Theodoty or Theadity and various other phonetic spellings), and I have come to believe that Data was not a surname but the forename of the wife of John Henry Camber. The adult baptismal record of their daughter, Margaret (Peggy), gave her father's name as the late Henry Camber but left her mother's name blank; the burial record of their daughter Theodata noted that her relatives were Henry and Theodoty Camber, which appear to be her parents' names. The death registration of daughter Polly M. Camber in 1878 gave her mother's name as Heborah, but the informant is unknown. The present-day Nulhegan-Memphremagog Abenaki Tribe, using their records, has tentatively identified Theodata Heborah as a member of the Cohassiac / Cowasuk / Coos / Old Philip's Band of the Abenaki, confirming the family legend that she was Native American.
