Eilean Donan

Here is beautiful Eilean Donan Castle, near Dornie in Scotland.  Dornie is nearly 6 hours' drive north of Glasgow -- a wonderful way to learn to drive on the other side of the road, up the winding and sometimes single-lane roads along steep cliffs!

Eilean Donan Castle was for generations the seat of the Clan MacKenzie and now owned by the Macraes.  It sat in ruins for over 100 years until being restored in the 1920s.  I stayed in the picturesque Dornie Hotel, which I would recommend to anyone visiting the area.  In the morning I watched the mist roll down the sides of the hills and cover the entrance to Loch Alsh.  It was breathtaking.

These photos are from the lookout point above the village.  There are often dolphins swimming near the castle, but not any I could see.  The castle is open to the public, but as it is also a private residence, photographs are not permitted to be taken inside.

In the distance, surrounded by mist, is the Isle of Skye.  Although it can be reached by a bridge, most evidence of modern civilization is hidden here and it is easy to imagine Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald sailing over the sea to reach safety on its shores.
