Harbord

horizontal rule

Although I do now know the connection between the Harbord family and my Heriott ancestors, Sir Charles Harbord referred to my ancestor James Heriott as "my cozen" in his will.  Sir Charles' sons (Sir) Charles and William both stood as godfathers to several of the Heriott children, and the youngest son of James Heriott was named Harbord Heriott.  According to his will, Sir Charles Harbord's parents were married and buried in the Parish of Midsomer Norton in Somerset; a William Harborde was buried at St John the Baptist, Midsomer Norton, on 13 June 1616.  The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states that his marriage to Mary van Aelst was his second: perhaps the connection to the Heriott family came through his first marriage.  In later years the Harbords would marry with the Hamonds of Westacre, Norfolk, a family who for a time owned the Manor House in South Wootton, Norfolk, which was owned by James Heriott and his son Dr Charles Heriott during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
