New York

I had a crazy idea in early February to go see New York City.  The first thing I noticed as the plane drew near were the lights -- they were visible some 45 minutes before we began our descent into LaGuardia.  The biggest surprise that night was that the Statue of Liberty doesn't look very big at all from the air and it was a lot smaller in reality than it appears in movies!

I saw Miss Saigon on Broadway and then went to Gallagher's for a traditional NY steak dinner.  It was a beautiful night so it was time for a walking tour of Upper Manhattan, taking in all the sights I had seen only on TV.  I was surprised at how clean and safe it all seemed -- certainly a far cry from Law & Order!

The next day I saw the last preview of Death of a Salesman with Brian Dennehy, which had actually been one of the reasons to choose NYC as a weekend getaway.  Did I mention shopping?  I managed to leave my gloves behind and, although it was starting to be spring-like, it was still necessary to pop into Saks to pick up some nice new ones...which I would one day forget in a shopping trolley in a supermarket in Cambridge.

I also took a tour of NBC studios, getting to wander around the sets of Saturday Night Live, Conan O'Brien and more.

There wasn't enough time to see everything and so the Statue of Liberty and World Trade Center were left for another time.  Now I wish I had gone.

I did do a very typical tourist thing and took a horse-drawn carriage through Central Park.  It had snowed the night before and everything was sparkling and white under the sunlight.  Kids were skating on a pond near an antique carousel.

Such a beautiful city and wonderful, friendly people.  I would love to return.
