#5        JOHN J. HOPPES, ENTREPRENEUR

 

            21364 John J. Hoppes, the oldest son of 2136 Daniel Hoppes and his second wife Helen Stanton, was born in September 1857 in Pickaway County, OH. His remarkable life has been documented in a number of Hoppes Generations publications including HOPPES BIOGRAPHIES, HOPPES BOOKS SUMMARIZED, and WHEN HOPPES MEETS HOPPES.   The following obituary was sent to me in 1972 by Robert R. Hoppes of Hellertown, PA, who had received it earlier from 241221Lucius J. Hoppes of Salem, OH:

 

            INDUSTRIALIST DIES AT SPRINGFIELD, O.
            Springfield, O., July 13, 1945

John J. Hoppes, 87, the city’s leading industrialist, inventor, and former city official, died here yesterday.  Mr. Hoppes’ health had been failing for several years.

 At the time of his death he was president of the Hoppes Manufacturing Co., and a director of the Everwear Manufacturing Co., here.

 Mr. Hoppes was elected a member of the first Springfield city commission and in 1895 was made one of the first police and fire commissioners.  Later he served as city councilman.

 A past president of the Board of Trade and the Commercial Club, Mr. Hoppes was the principal organizer of the Springfield Improvement League and the Chamber of Commerce.

 In addition he organized the Springfield Manufactures Club and assisted in the organization of the National Manufacturers Association in Chicago.

 The Hoppes Manufacturing Co. was started by Mr. Hoppes in 1882.   It was known then as the Hoppes Heater Co., and manufactured specialties for steam power plants, water purifiers, etc.

 Many of the machines and processes now in use in the factory were designed and patented by Mr. Hoppes.

 Besides his wife he is survived by a brother, Charles, and a nephew, Edwin Hoppes, both of Springfield, and a niece, Mrs. Earl Hansell, Birmingham, Mich.

 Funeral arrangements are being completed by the Richards Memorial Home.

 

        Although he achieved national recognition through his many activities, patents, and manufactured products, Hoppes Manufacturing Co. is no longer in business.
