bullet  General Notes:

Mother's name was POLLY, surname UNK. She was born about 1760 and died after 1811. See Clyde Walton notes. French Tipton Papers, (Univ. of Eastern Kentucky, Richmond: says Thomas, only son, inherited land from father Charles. These papers show him as born 1773, died 1846, married 1811 (compare to Marie Ballew/ Clyde Walton information.) Was a farmer but was extremely active as a Baptist preacher and teacher. Other records indicate that he owned a number slaves. There is a reunion of decendents of slaves of Thomas, the Ballew/Broaddus Association, held yearly (1994 info) at (usually) Madison KY. Will filed 4 Apr 1846 in Madison Co. KY.

Paul L. Wertz has a copy of a will dated 25 March 1844, signed with a codicil on 28 June 1845 and executed in Madison County, KY on 4 April 1846. In the will he gives his age as 65 years on 1 March 1844. He names his wife, Fanny, and his children, George Ballew, Elizabeth Boggs, William, Charles Ballew, Polly Park, Nancy Broaddus, and Thomas Woodson Ballew. He also names a granddaughter, Mildred Ballew. The will makes provisional distribution of his lands, allocates slaves (apparently there were three of these) to the children and grandchild and directs income distribution to named children for services rendered. The family farm in
Madison County was named "Curle Farm". The codicil barred William and George from sharing in the estate since each had received 1183 pounds before the will was made and each was living in "Missouri Territory". Son-in-law Park was also removed by codicil as a beneficiary. George may have moved to Howard County MO (Booneville).

Marie Ballew notes: DAR Cemetery Records, Vol. 1, p. 295 shows him buried wtrh his wife, Fanny, in the U.S. Cemetery on Big Hill Road. They were moved from the 15,000 acre Blue Grass Ordinance Depot.
