General Notes:
Charlemagne (Charles I) King of the Franks, and Roman Emperor. Born April 2, 742. He died at Aix-La-Chapelle January 28, 814. He married 1. The daughter of Desiderius. He married 2. Hildegard, the Swabian Princess of Savey, the daughter of Childebrand, Duke of Swabia. Charlemagne marched two armies over the Alps and conquered Lombardy in 774. He returned and beat the Saxons again and hastened into Spain in 778 to help the Arabian rulers of that country against the Oman Caliph of Cordova. It was in this war that the hero of ramance, Roland, fell in the pass of Roncesvalles. In 799 the Romans revolted against Pope Leo III and were again brought into subjection by Charlemagne, who, in return, while was praying on the steps of St. Peter's Church, was crowned by Leo III with the iron crown of the Western Empire, unexpectedly to him, as he pretended, on Christmas Day 800. His fame spread through all the land. The Caliph Haroun-al-Rashid sent an embassy to the Court of Charlemagne gifts in token of good will. Charlemagne and Hildegard had Pepin, Charles and Louis. Charlemagne's descendants are called Carlovingians.
Charlemagne married Hildegarde Empress Of The West in 771 in Aix-LA-Chapelle. (Hildegarde Empress Of The West was born about 757 in Aachen, Rhineland, Prussia and died on 30 Apr 783.)
