Descendants of Thomas Hunt (211)

Generation One

1. THOMAS1 HUNT (211) was born circa 1615 at Keyston, Hunts or Northants, England. He married Cicely Clark (212). He died circa 1695. His estate was probated on 27 Feb 1694/95 at New York City, New York (Thomas Hunt Descendants, Manuscript, December 1936, Copy in possession of Everett Hunt, Santa Barbara, New York, p 50.).
From Mitchell Hunt The Early Hunt Families of Vermont: Thomas Hunt, 1639, New Haven, Stamford, LI, and Westchester, NY, start of the so-called New York Line of Hunts. Few, if any, of the early settlers of the northeastern US have had their histories and genealogies of descendants so badly distorted and confused as Thomas Hunt, the New York pioneer, and his contemporary unrelated neighbor Ralph Hunt, the pioneer on Long Island. Older histories and genealogies speculate that both descend from a Richard Hunt of Shrewsbury, ENG, and a Col. Thomas Hunt of Cromwell's Army. Despite numerous refutations in periodical genealogical literature, the legend continues to be perpetuated. A recent genealogical dictionary of Westchester County, NY, families prior to 1755 (Westchester Patriarchs, Norman Davis, Heritage Books, Inc., 1988) presents a badly garbled recitation of the descendants of Thomas Hunt, one of the largest groups of families in the book, which mars an otherwise impressive publication and raises doubts about much of the information in the 325 page book.

John Griffiths Hunt in 1936 published a masterly genealogy of descendants of Thomas Hunt (although not familiar at that time with his ancestors, and the document contains many errors which have since been discovered) and followed through in 1959 with articles published in the NEHG Register in 1959 and 1960 which provide the best documentation yet seen on the ancestors of Thomas Hunt. Thomas Hunt, b. abt 1615-20 (no documentation of his birth or age found), prob. at Keston (Keyston), Northants, ENG, prob. came from there, and directly from ENG to the New Haven Colony in 1639 as an indentured servant to William Leete who was to become a Governor of the New Haven Colony, and later a Lt. Gov. and Governor of the Conn. Colony after the New Haven Colony was brought under the government of Conn. under the charter of 1662.

At New Haven he m. abt 1639 his wife Cicely (in many older genealogies including Wyman, her last name is given as Pasley or Paisley, but JGH gives impressive evidence that she was Cicely Clark, b. abt 1619, who came to Boston on the ship Planter in 1635 at age 16 with the Tuttle Family with whom she moved to New Haven Colony in 1639). On the first of March 1643 Thomas and his wife were ordered out of New Haven for keeping company with a man disliked by the ruling elders of New Haven. They then moved to the newly-formed town of Stamford. In 1652 Thomas Hunt bought from Augustine Harmons land on Spicer and Bracketts Neck which became the nucleus for his famous Grove Farm. He apparently did not move there at that time because of disputes between the English and the Dutch who at that time occupied and claimed the New York area. (Thomas is found in Stamford CT in 1660 - ejh) The family removed to Newtown, LI, (now Elmhurst) where they are found in records in 1660 and 1661. On Sept. 6, 1664, Col. Nichols took possession of "New Amsterdam" and the English took over from the Dutch. Thomas Hunt moved on to his Westchester Grove farm and in October 1664 he is described as "a delegate from Westchester." From 1664 until his death in 1695 he resided on his Grove Farm. He left a will in which he identified his children as Thomas, Joseph, John, Josiah, and Abigail, and left his Grove Farm, entailed (to pass on to eldest sons of successors) to his grandson Josiah, son of Josiah, who was subsequently known as "Grove Siah." .....

As noted above, the pioneer Thomas Hunt left his Grove Farm to his grandson Josiah who left it to his son Jacob who died without heirs and title passed to Jacob's brother Caleb and then to Caleb's son Gilbert, who died without children leaving a Will which authorized his mother, brothers, and unmarried sisters to live on the farm for 12 years after which it was to be sold and the proceeds divided. The property was sold by Gilbert's brother Marmaduke in 1760, and then purchased in 1775 by John Ferris who was m. to Marianne (usually seen as Miana or Myana) Hunt. This gets us to the Ferris family, intermarried several times with the Westchester Hunt families, and early proprietors in NH Charters for several Vermont towns.

A NH Charter of 15 Feb 1763 granted the town of Hinesburg to 64 associates including Benjamin and David Ferriss, and Abel and Noble Hine, the latter Hine serving as the Proprietors' Clerk. Most of the proprietors were from New Milford, CT, and the first proprietors' meeting was held there in July of 1762 with Benjamin Ferriss as Moderator. Other lands were granted by NH in Essex and St. Albans to David Hunt, Jr., and Josiah Hunt, and the town of Huntington (under the name of New Huntington) was granted by NH 7 June 1763 to 65 associates including Josiah, Charles, and Marmaduke Hunt for whom the town was named. The Ferris family was also involved in the grants to Moncton, Charlotte, and Ferrisburg, and the latter was named for the Ferris family, Benjamin Ferris named to call the first Proprietors' Meetings. Later he and David Ferris surveyed the town of Ferrisburg and divided it into lots for the other proprietors.

David Hunt, Jr., owned land at Essex in 1764 and he and Theophilus Hunt signed a petition regarding their land there in 1766. Essex has other significance to the Hunt families because Lydia Davenport, dau. of John Davenport, one of the pioneers at Essex, m. Joseph Lockwood Hunt of Hinesburg, son of Theophilus Hunt. Theophilus Hunt, Jr., b. 1746 (Theophilus-4 of Westchester and New Milford, CT, David-3 of Westchester, Josiah-2, Thomas-1), m. 13 March 1767 Millicent Lockwood at Stamford, CT. Their son Joseph Lockwood Hunt is shown by family records to have been b. at Hinesburg, VT, 24 April 1784 (no record in VVR). The Lockwood families from CT were also among the early settlers of Vermont. Israel Lockwood was at New Milford, CT, in the 1790 census and moved soon after to Charlotte, VT, where he is found in the 1800 census. His son Oliver was b. in NY in 1789 and his son David was b. at Hinesburg in 1792 as was a son Walter in 1800. An inventory of Church Records of Vermont--Hinesburg (WPA, 1939) shows the eight children of Nathaniel Lockwood, Jr., brother of Millicent Lockwood who m. Theophilus Hunt.

A petition of 9 Oct 1795 asking for a tax of one penny per acre to build roads in New Huntington was signed by Marmaduke Hunt. Theophilus Hunt is found in Hinesburg in the 1800 census.

None of these Hunt families is found in Vermont in the 1810 census. Although the family had a long association with Vermont during its formative years, their actual presence in the towns of Vermont was brief and they moved westward through New York, Ohio, Illinois, et. al. Details on the family of Theophilus Hunt and his relatives need not be stated here. In April 1969 Stanley Browne Hunt, then of New York City, published a magnificent genealogy on Theophilus Hunt which was republished with updating by his younger brother Edwin Simonds Hunt of Rockford, IL, in April 1987, a process still continuing by Edwin Hunt and his cousin Clifford Joel Hunt. That report has reportedly been given wide distribution to historical and genealogical libraries in the East and Mid-West, including the New York Public Library, NEHGS in Boston, and the Library of Congress.

John G. Hunt notes a son Jeremiah, of Beekman, N.Y. with sons Jeremiah and Philip. These were likely Joshua's brother and nephews, as shown by Doherty. He also ascribes to Joshua: Pexall, apparently deceased without issue, and Benjamin. NFI.

Children of Joshua3 Hunt (112) and Mercy Oakley (113) were as follows:
Children of Joshua3 Hunt (112) include:

McKenzie says spouse is Ruth ______; Fish says spouse is Sarah Conklin. Frank Doherty reports that Jeremiah had a dau Ruth who m Michael Vincent. Michael Vincent's will in 1801 listed Ruth's siblings, and they are different from what is listed here.

Since Michael Vincent's will is the best evidence for Jeremiah's children, I have taken the list of children from that

(Ibid.).
Children of Jeremiah3 Hunt (78) and Ruth ______ (79) were as follows:

20. OBADIAH3 HUNT (131) (John2, Thomas1) was born after 1697 (Thomas Hunt Descendants, Manuscript, December 1936 Copy in possession of Everett Hunt, p 38.). He married Elizabeth Canniff (268), daughter of Jeremiah Canniff (1028), before 1735. He died circa 1759.

22. JOSEPH3 HUNT (286) (Joseph2, Thomas1) was born on 16 Oct 1672 at Cow Neck, New York (Joseph Hunt Descendants, Family Bible, Joseph Hunt Family ; Allen Co. Public Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Hereinafter cited as Joseph Hunt Bible.). He and Bethia Ferguson (287) obtained a marriage license on 20 Dec 1697 (George T. Fish, Thomas and Cecilia Hunt descendants, p 60.). He died circa 1743.
In 1698 census of Town of Westchester, Joseph Hunt Jr. and wife Bethiah with 2 children: Daniel and Martha. From this McKenzie presumes Joseph has a first wife who had children Martha and Daniel. Only Thomas has definitely been established as a son of Joseph. There is no evidence of a wife other than Bethiah and Martha and Daniel might have been children of Joseph's brother Daniel, living with Joseph and Bethiah at the time. Arnaud shows the younger Daniel as son of Daniel and not Joseph. Frank Doherty, in his research of the Beekman Patent settlers, believes that Daniel and Martha were children of Joseph and Bethiah, because Daniel, Joseph's brother, would have been too young at the time of the birth of the child Daniel.

Daniel b 1693 or 1696 is referred to as Daniel Jr. in records found by Mr. Doherty in records of the Beekman Patent. Whether the "Jr." is used to differentiate a father from son or an uncle from nephew is unclear, but the differentiation of father from son was more common.

The best evidence is the family bible of Joseph and Bethiah which went with their son Sylvanus to the area of Princeton, NJ, and with Sylvanus' son Jonathan to Western Pennsylvania and Ohio. Records from that Bible are in the Josephine Brown collection at the Warren, Ohio, Public Library, data which shows children as shown. (see Fish with annotations of Mitchell Hunt P 105; see appendix for transcript of Bible furnished by John Capestro)

The will of Joseph Hunt mentions his "eldest son" Thomas, which would suggest Daniel and Martha had other origins.

John G. Hunt notes tha Joseph and Bethia (dau of John and Mary Turner Ferguson) had at least four children: Daniel, who m Abigail Eddas; Martha, Joseph, of the manor of Cortland, deceased 27 Jun 1786, who m Levina Travis, dau of David Travis; and Thomas (1698-1770) (Grenville C. Mackenzie, Westchester Hunts.) (George T. Fish, Thomas and Cecilia Hunt descendants.) (Frank Doherty, Beekman Patent Settlers.) (Thomas Hunt Descendants, Manuscript, December 1936 Copy in possession of Everett Hunt, p 33.).
Children of Joseph3 Hunt (286) and Bethia Ferguson (287) were as follows:

23. DANIEL3 HUNT (334) (Joseph2, Thomas1) was born circa 1676. He was born in 1678 (Thomas Hunt Descendants, Manuscript, December 1936 Copy in possession of Everett Hunt, p 33.). He married Phebe Edwards (337), daughter of Robert Edwards (1060) and Charity Hunt-Leggett (1061). He married Mary (--?--) (1041) before 1726.
John G. Hunt states Daniel of Westchester was b 1678. He was a lieutenant at the age of 18, in the defense of Schenectady. Daniel Hunt was living in Rye, NY, in the year 1727, at which time his wife was Sarah. They had a son living at the time. Their probable issue: Daniel Hunt (of Sharon, CT, and Amenia, NY - Captain); Gilbert Hunt (of North Salem, NY). Daniel Hunt of Sharon, CT, was the father of Sybil, b 1740. She m Jehiel Pardee, widower, and deceased at Sharon in 1834. The wife of Daniel Hunt was Hannah. Daniel Hunt of Sharon may also have been the father of Gilbert and Daniel Hunt of Putnam County, N.Y., the former of whom deceased 1885 aged 94 and the later of whom deceased 1849, aged 84. (JGH) (Ibid.).
Children of Daniel3 Hunt (334) and Phebe Edwards (337) were as follows:
There were no children of Daniel3 Hunt (334) and Mary (--?--) (1041).

24. SAMUEL3 HUNT (148) (Joseph2, Thomas1) was born in 1678 at Cow Neck, Westchester, New York. He married Mary Underhill (149), daughter of Humphrey Underhill (1044) and Sarah (--?--) (1066). He died before 22 Nov 1742. His estate was probated on 22 Nov 1742.
Only Samuel who m Abigail Embree has been proven to be a child of Samuel who m Mary Underhill. William b 1712 has been listed as son of William, and grandson of John2(Thomas1); likewise for Joseph Hunt. (See Fish p 102) John G. Hunt states that Samuel of Harrisons and Rye, NY, deceased 22 Nov 1742 and when hsi will was proven, he appears to have only one son, Samuel, by his wife Mary Underhill, dau of Humphrey and Sarah.
Children of Samuel3 Hunt (148) and Mary Underhill (149) were as follows:

71. DANIEL4 HUNT (1) (Daniel3, Joseph2, Thomas1) was born circa 1693 (Frank Doherty, Beekman Patent Settlers.). He was born in 1696 at Westchester, New York. He married Sarah ______ (2). Frank Doherty, researcher of the Beekman Patent in Dutchess County, N.Y. relates that Daniel did not die in 1760 as reported in Fish but that date probably applies to his son Daniel (Thomas Hunt Descendants, Manuscript, December 1936 Copy in possession of Everett Hunt.) (Frank Doherty, Beekman Patent Settlers.).
There is controversy over the parentage of this Daniel. He is reported in McKenzie to be the son of Joseph and Bethiah, but Fish and Mitchell Hunt believe him to be the son of Daniel. Frank Doherty points out that the father Daniel was quite young to be the father of this Daniel. The children Martha and Daniel do appear in a census of 1698 in Beekman, Dutchess County, in the household of Joseph and Bethiah.
See more under Joseph Hunt.

Furthermore, the children of this Daniel are best guesses. This Daniel has been presumed to be the father of Stephen, William, Gilbert, Daniel, Abel, Timothy, and Samuel, but a source for Timothy stated that Timothy's father died when Timothy was only sixteen, so it cannot be this Daniel. See "Settlers of the Beekman Patent" by Doherty.

John G. Hunt places this Daniel as son of Joseph and Bethiah, and states that he married Abigail Eddas. They had at least two children: Phebe and Asenath (who are mentioned in the will of their maternal grandsire, Robert Eddas, which will was dated 2 Feb 1726).
Children of Daniel4 Hunt (1) and Sarah ______ (2) were as follows:

This marriage is in question. There is no documentation of this to date. That Samuel had a son Samuel seems to be documented by the will of Mary Underhill's father. Paul Gifford, a researcher of the Cambridge, Washington County Hunts, thinks that Abigail Embree probably married William Hunt (Daniel4, Daniel3, Joseph2, Thomas).

John G. Hunt includes several children which appear to be descendants of John Hunt and Hannah Benson of Rochester, MA, and most likely in the Duxbury line (see infra) (Thomas Hunt Descendants, Manuscript, December 1936 Copy in possession of Everett Hunt, p 35.).
Children of Samuel4 Hunt (150) and Abigail Embree (307) were:

Oneida County history ' Our County and Its People'; Wager; 1896; p 18 of biographical sketches reports that Robert, Isaac's son, was one of twelve children. In 'Yesteryears', summer 1975: 'Lots 57 and 58 of the township were settled by a group of kinsmen from Herkimer County, NY, who about the year 1829 made their homes on the upper town line road between present Eagle and Arcade. The first arrivals were Isaac Hunt, Daniel Hunt, and Abel Merville. Four years after, Isaac Hunt, Sr., William Hunt, Elias Loomis who married a sister of the Hunt boys, and Abraham Ward, who had married another sister arrived on the scene. Thus began what was called 'Hunt Settlement.' Anthony Andrews, Buffalo, NY 'Wyoming County - Some Early Settlers of the Towns of Eagle and Bliss'; ;2, p 43: 'The story of early Methodism in Eagle Valley and at bliss was recorded by the Rev. W.H. White, pastor of the Bliss Church at the time of its 75th anniversary in 1904. From this source comes the facts offered below. In the year of 1829, the first class was formed by A.B. Merville, Isaac Hunt and Daniel Hunt and their families, all of whom had come from Herkimer County, New York, and settled in the unbroken forest in Eagle township, on the west line between Eagle and China (Arcade), a line which then divided Allegany from Genesee County. By 1833, other relatives of the pioneer families had migrated into the neighborhood from the same locality back East. These arrivals included Isaac Hunt, Sr., William Hunt, Abraham Ward and Elias D. Loomis. Their lands, ranging three miles aparts, became known as the 'Hunt settlement'. These folks had been members of the Methodist society in the town of Warren, Herkimer County, and their arrival added numbers and zeal to the small class already formed. Regular services were held in the different homes. Isaac Hunt Sr. is said to have been the leading spirit of this pioneer group, and within his home many of the meetings were held. His role was also that of appointed as well as natural leader. He was a man of decided character, it's recorded, so much so that he held such aversion to the ancient requirement that tickets be shown at Methodist 'love feasts' that on one occasion he, Samson-like, took the door off its hinges and carried it away, and thus let in all who came' (Wager, Our County and Its People (n.p.: n.pub., 1896), Page 18.
