James' maternal grandmother Christiana Ann Dumbauld
in the late 1860s? |
Burlington Republican, Burlington,
Kansas, February 13, 1917 P4C2
MRS. ALBERT CUMMINS IS BURIED AT STRAWN
Christiana Dumbauld was born near Thornville, Perry County, Ohio,
March 7, 1843; while she was quite young the family moved near Johnston
and later Homer, Ohio, where she grew to womanhood. February 19, 1868 she
was married to Albert Cummins; to them were born seven sons and four
daughters, one daughter dying during infancy. The surviving children are
Wm. S. of Silverton, Colo; David F., of Hawthorne, Calif.; Frederic C.,
Arthur and Mrs. Ella F. Sears of Bellingham, Wash; Joseph L. of Mound
Ridge; Mrs. Mary C. Sims of Barclay; James and Albert E., near Strawn, and
Mrs. W. V. Hamman of Strawn, Kans, with whom this aged couple had made
their home the last eighteen months. There are twenty-five grandchildren.
One brother and two sisters are living. Dr. W. A. Dumbauld of
Cartersville, Mo; Mrs. Mary C. Shoemaker of Columbus and Mrs. Ella F.
Williams of Homer, Ohio. Mrs. Cummins was baptized during infancy and
later confirmed as a member of the German reformed Presbyterian Church. On
coming to Kansas in 1879 she united with the Methodist church at Strawn
remaining a faithful member until called home. Almost two years ago she
was smitten with paralysis; during her sickness she was cheerful and
patient and was hopeful to the end. For seventy-four years and a day she
journeyed through life the end coming peacefully March 8, 1917. For more
than forty-nine years she walked with her aged and now bereft companion
and they had begun to look forward to a celebration of their fiftieth
wedding anniversary. Father Cummins and the large number who mourn have
the sympathy of the entire community.
Funeral services were conducted in the M. E. church at Strawn, March
10, by her pastor, W. E. Jenkins; appropriate songs were sung including a
solo entitled "Saving by Grace." Friends and neighbors laid her
body to rest in the Strawn cemetery.
No more will her bright, cheery voice be heard on earth; no more will
passers by see the aged couple sitting in the shady yard, but with Father
Cummins and the mourning children we will hope to meet her in the
"Heaven of Rest" when we have "Crossed the Bar."
