By Act of 15 & 16 Victoria, the country of Ireland was placed under
the direction of Sir Richard Griffith, and was laid out for valuation
of each tenement, throughout the island. When the work was finished,
it was printed, and a copy posted in prominent places in the nearest
town. Those who felt that the valuation was incorrect could then make
an appeal to have it changed or corrected. None of the later valuations
were printed. All are preserved in more or less good condition, at the
Valuation Office, 6 Ely Place, Dublin, and may be consulted there, or
enquiries made by mail. The Primary Valuation was transferred to the
Public Record Office, since it is a good substitute for the census, which
was almost totally destroyed. A surname index to the Primary Valuation
has been typed and is in the National Library, Kildare Street. Just the
same, for the purposes of most American-Irish people, this record is
far too late to help them find their ancestors.
Here, we present the valuation for the entire Parish of Ballycanew.
