"MYSTERY SAM" HOLLINGSWORTH
IN FRANKLIN COUNTY, GEORGIA

"Mystery Sam" is right. He's a mystery man, that he is! His
presence is one of those unforseen and somewhat "unwanted" things.
Our contented or selfish side wants to reject his like a new heart
transplant; but our honest side, which we hope is stronger, wants to
identify him quickly. Here are the facts we already knew in connection
with him:

    (1) Jacob Hollingsworth settled in Franklin County, Georgia,
about 1796, moving there from Buncombe County, North Carolina. (See
page 15 item 2, and pp. 17-18.)

    (2) Stewart's book, p. 143, (and Hollingsowrth Memoranda book,
page 112) identifies this Jacob as Jacob4 son of Samuel3 and Barbary
(Shewin) Hollingsworth, who moved south from Chester County, Penna.

    (3) Stewart and the Memoranda Book, same page references, correctly
state that Jacob4 had brother Samuel4 Hollingsworth. Also say
this Sam migrated south.

    (4) Stewart, page 140, incorrectly equates above Samuel4 with
the man (Samuel4 Hollingsworth, son of Stephen3 of John2 of Valentine1)
who lived near Fayetteville, North Carolina. (See HR Vol. 2,
pp. 142-147: Vol. 3, 24 et seq.)

    (5) Subsequent diligent research proved, seemingly, that the
right Samuel Hollingsworth, brother of the Franklin County, Georgia
Jacob, was the man of that name who died in 1810 in Haywood County,
North Carolina. (See HR Vol. 2, p. 147 et seq.)

Now, here are the new fact which brought "Mystery Sam" to our
attention and have thrown a monkey wrench into our delicate works:

    (A) Tax Digests, 1802, Franklin County, Georgia (Originals on
microfilm examined by ye Editor), Capt Thomas Martin's Tax District,
list THOMAS, JACOB SR, JACOB JR., JAMES HOLLINGSWORTH, and "SAMUEL
HOLLINGSWORTH, Deceased." Also:...(here it comes!)..."SAMUEL
HOLLINGSWORTH, SENIOR...no land." The 1803 Digest gives same record.

    (B) Estate Papers, August 6, 1802 Court. Estate of SAMUEL
HOLLINGSWORTH, son of Jacob. Jacob and Mary Hollingsworth administer
estate. (HR Vol. 2, pp. 104-5.) Guardianships for the "5 minor children"
of said deceased, appointed at various sessions. (Ibid.) Jacob
Hollingsworth, Sr., in his will, mentions the deceased son Samuel,
and Samuel's 5 children and his widow, then Mary Robbins. (Ibid.)
This identifies the above deceased in the Tax Digests of 1802, 1803.

    (C) Georgia Land Lottery, 1805, lists:

HOLLINGSWORTH, MARY (widow) Drew 2 blanks. Franklin County.
         " SAMUEL " " " " "

The above Mary is the widow of young Samuel Hollingsworth. Above Samuel
Hollingsworth is "Mystery Sam" staring us in the face! To receive
right to draw twice, he had to be a free white male over 21 and married,
with or without his own ligitimate children. (HR Vol. 2, p. 18.
