Solomon James Lancaster Andrews

Solomon Andrews was born on the 11th of December, 1844 in Clark Co. Alabama. His father came to America from England with a brother, leaving behind 7 sisters. At age 14, he came to Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana with his parents who settled in the northern part of the parish.
Solomon joined the Confederate Army and served in the 4th Louisiana Cavalry. He was a prisoner of war, captured near Alexandria, La., March 25th 1864. Was received at New Orleans, La., April 25th 1865. Transferred from New Orleans, La., and exchanged at Red River Landing, july 22nd, 1864. At some unknown time during the war, his father was attacked in his home by jayhawkers and shot. They sent work to the army that his father was dieing and he was sent home on furlough. When he arrived home, the jayhawkers were still in the family home. They shot his father in the head as he watched.

On the 10th of January, 1867, in Dry Creek, Louisiana, he married Catherine Ilse, the daughter of Dempsy Ilse, Jr. and Martha Perkins. Together they had 15 children, six girls and nine boys Four died as infants or small children. Known children were: James Micajah, born 1867 who married Mary E Harper. William, born 1869, married Catherine Harper. Robert Maurice, born 1871, married Elya "Sissy" Harper. Dempsy, born 1874 and married first, Rosie Wright and second, Della Simmons. Sarah Louisa, born in 1875. Susan Rosa, born in 1877 and married William Brown Welborn, IV (the fourth) Martha Francis, born in 1879 and married Chappel Freeman Jones. Eliza Johanna, born in 1882 and married Thomas J. Bush. Harold Jefferson, born in 1884 and married Eula LeBlanc. Samuel Andrews, born in 1886, died in 1887. Florence Elaine, born in 1888, died in 1889. Carl Curtis, born in 1889 and married Minnie Kenser. Letha Laurena, born in 1892 and died in 1892. Barney Edward, born in 1893 and married Martha Jane McFatter. Gilbert Bryan, born in 1896 and married Frances LeBlanc.

Solomon was a farmer, a livery stable owner and served as the Marshall of Oberlin, La.
