The early history of the Beck family is difficult to coordinate as there is much misinformation circulating in various GedComs. We can fully document the Beck family from the date of  Daniel Beck's marriage to Elizabeth Summers in Augusta County, Virginia. We have now located the will of his father Andrew Beck in Augusta County, Virginia, thus, we believe we have creditable evidence of his parents from the St. John's Church records in Augusta County, Virginia and also in Frederick Co., Maryland.

Andreas Beck of Ebingen, Wuerttemberg, born 11-4-1740, son of Andreas, who sailed with Jacob Beck and Johann Bernhard Beck, in ship Edinburg, Sep 14 1753, arriving in  Philadelphia, and Christina Dorothea Keimmel.

Andreas Beck Jr. married Catharina Bucher Jul 30 1758, by Rev Heinselman, At Augustus Lutheran Church, Trapp PA.  Bernhard also had a son Andreas b.11 30 1738 ( Yoder, Penn. German Immigrants 1709-1786, pg 36)  This is undoubtedly Bernhard's son.

A christening record was found for Daniel Beck, whose parents were Andreas and Anna Beck.  Further research revealed a marriage in the Rev. John Cooper Stoever's '1429' marriage records.

Andreas Beck (Donegal) and Anna Weber (Hanover) 1760, January 15th . This coincides with the time frame we are seeking.

And then we find the christening record for Daniel.

Daniel Beck was christened 9 October 1776 at the Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Andreas and Anna Beck according to IGI records located on the LDS site.

Andrew's will probated November court, 1822 in Augusta County, Virginia verifies Daniel and Jacob as his sons.

Andrew's will was written 9 Sept 1820, probated Nov court 1822. Children named are:
Jacob Beck (of Ohio) Maria Dice, Barbara Eckard, deceased & her
husband Jacob & children, Elizabeth Allen, Daniel Beck, and Nancy Beck

In 1788,  we find Andrew Beck's name in Augusta County, Virginia in Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scots-Irish verifying his presence in Augusta Co. before 1788.

(546) Mary Miller's son, Daniel Miller, to be bound to Andrew Peck. (June 17, 1788)

And then we find  Anna Beck in Augusta county, Virginia
An Anna Catherine Beck was a communicant of St Johns Church, Middlebrook, Augusta Co, Virginia, listed in 1794 as a sponsor for her grandson, Jacob Frenger, and granddaughter, Anna Christina Frenger, in 1791, children of Peter & Catherine Frenger. pg 6 St Johns church register compiled by Peggy Joyner.
Beck marriages in early Augusta County, Virginia  records.

1790--October 14, Jacob Eccard and Barbara Peck, daughter of Andrew
Peck (consent); surety, Henry Hull.

1799--December 9, Daniel Peck and John Summers, surety. (Daniel Beck
and Elizabeth Summers, daughter of John Summers.)

Another son John is found
in Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch Irish
Page 226.--3d May, 1790. Inquest upon body of a man found in a field
of Maj. Andrew Anderson.

Verdict: Is the body of John Peck, son of Andrew Peck, aged between
sixteen and seventeen; died by hand of God--Robert Kenney, Andrew
Anderson, James Allen, Jr., Alex. Reed, John Crawford, Thomas Poage, Jr.,
Jas. Kerr, Jas. Cochran, Thos. Frame, Wm. Crawford, John Campbell,
John Gamble. Held in consequence of an order from me in absence of
Coroner.--David Stephenson.
From this point on, with the help of other descendants, we can document the activities of our family line up
to the present day. In 1810, Andrew, Jacob and Dan Peck all lived neighbors. Both Andrew and Jacob
are over 45. Dan is under 26-45.
In 1820, Andrew, Daniel and Joseph Peck are all listed on the same page
and all appear to be listed as over 45. But Daniel's wife is still listed
as under 45

For some reason, Daniel Beck was listed as Daniel Peck in the early Augusta County, Virginia records and when he married. Did Daniel not know how to read and write and the recorder wrote Peck? All family records we have list them as Beck.  Mrs. Bushman did indicate that they first used the name Peck when they came to Augusta County and later changed back to Beck. While Daniel was a Peck a.k.a. Beck, he was not part of another Jacob Peck's family in Augusta County.  Whether Andrew, Jacob, and Joseph were related through an earlier generation is not known.

    A.     Daniel1 Beck was christened 9 October 1776 at the Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Andreas and Anna Beck according to IGI records located on the LDS site.   He died Bef. March 1831 when his estate was settled. On December 09 1799 in Augusta County, Virginia, he married Elizabeth Summers , b. abt. 1775-1780 (80 in 1860 census but was 85 in 1850 census??),  daughter of John Summers. We have recently learned that eight of the children of Daniel Beck moved to Indiana. Elizabeth went to Ohio. David and Margaret went to Iowa.

In his will, Daniel only indicated that his daughters were to receive one half of what the sons received. It was from the estate settlement that it was determined that he had 6 sons and 5 daughters still living & paid their share of the estate by the executor of his will. The six sons were John, Andrew, Jacob, David, Daniel, and William. The sons-in-law who were named with their "wife, but not their names" were George Douglas, Ralph Black, Washington Gwin, and George Harness.  From this we know that four of the daughters were Margaret, Sarah, Mary and Drusilla from consulting the marriage records of the four men above.  By 1850, Andrew was already gone from Augusta.  The two oldest daughters were married  and may have received their inheritance when they married and left the state  resulting in their omission in the estate settlement.  A letter from Elizabeth W. Beck Swink was published in the September 25, 1875 Spectater in Ohio, telling of a visit from the Becks, Snyders, and Swinks from Augusta Co., Va.

His will is recorded in Will book 17, page 50, dated 10 December 1830, proved March 1831
"Lived on the James River, near Staunton, VA--was a blacksmith by trade, but lived on a farm, raised stock, made wool flax, dried fruit, made butter and cheese, and owned a still-house. His home was a very pretentious one."

Nov 3, 1975, Creston, Union County, Ia. Mary Pearl may be a granddaughter as another George W. Guinn did come to Washington Co.}   This is undoubtedly an error as the Bible Record of Washington Guin and Margaret Beck do not show a daughter born that late. It also appears that their children were born in Indiana, not Iowa. Their children were all from 1831-1853. Bible Records of George Washington and Margaret Beck Guin follows:

Note: This record was, made on a fly leaf of the old familly Bible, was prepared by my father (Charles B. Crabill) at the old homeplace in1868 in the presence of aunt Laura Romine and others. Original in the possession of aunt Laura Romine.  W.G. Crabill

X. David Beck

9.David2 Beck (Daniel1) was born May 04, 1808 in Augusta Co., Va., and died September 04, 1893 in Johnson County, Iowa. He married Nancy Henderson November 14, 1833 in Augusta Co., Va., daughter of George Henderson and Nancy Reed.  David inherited land from his uncle David Henderson, for whom he was named, but David H. did not have as much land in Augusta Co., as he left his nephew. It is believed that David Henderson had land in Iowa that brought David Beck to Iowa when his siblings went to Indiana.

Notes for David Beck: Was in 1860 Iowa Census, Sharon Township, Johnson County, Iowa. Blacksmith. Buried in Grout Cemetery, Section 23, Sharon Township, Johnson County, Iowa

Documentation below.  Research in Augusta County, Virginia by Mrs. Katharine Bushman, now deceased.

Nancy Henderson was the daughter of George Henderson and Nancy Reed, both born in Scotland.

Records:

1) The will of Daniel Beck does not specify who his children were who were to share in estate. He states that the daughters were to have 1/2 of what each of the sons was to receive. His will is recorded in Will book 17, page 50, dated 10 December 1830, proved March 1831 as to the bond of David Summers (one of executors; June 1831, as to bond of Andrew Beck, the other executor. He left to wife Elizabeth 1/3. The estate left to her to be divided with sons to have equal portions, and daughters to have 1/2 of brothers portions--all to be done according to what each had already received.

2) Will Book 19, page 22, first settlement recorded--it is here that the number of children are given: 6 sons and 5 daughters.

3) WB 30, page 271, final settlement of Daniel Beck by David Summers (by 1850, Andrew Beck the other executor, was already gone from Virginia) recorded 26 August 1850. David Summers paid to the widow, Elizabeth; to John Beck, Andrew Beck, Jacob Beck, David Beck, Daniel Beck, William Beck; to George Dorsey and wife (Sarah) (this should be Douglas, error in Chalkley); to George Harness and wife, to Ralph Black and wife (Mary), Washington Gwin and wife (Margaret).

Daniel Beck died between 10 December 1830 and March 1831, Augusta County. His will is found in Will Book 17, page 500, dated as above. In his will, Daniel only indicated that his daughters were to receive one half of what the sons received. It was from the estate settlement that it was determined that he had 6 sons and 5 daughters still living & paid their share. The six sons were John, Andrew, Jacob, David, Daniel, and William. David Summers and Andrew Beck were named executors. The sons-in-law who were named with their "wife, but not their names" were George Douglas, Ralph Black, Washington Gwin, and George Harness. From this we know that four of the daughters were Margaret, Sarah, Mary and Drusilla from consulting the marriage records of the four men above. By 1850, Andrew was already gone from Augusta

Marriages of some of the Children:

    1. i.Elizabeth , married 30 September 1824, to Henry Swink. A letter from Ohio in the Spectator, September 21, 1875 by Elizabeth W. Swink, tells of the Swinke, Snyders and Henry Becks visiting about Rocky Spring Church.

David Beck and some of his children moved to Iowa around 1857- 8. The marriage records and cemetery records were found in Johnson County, Iowa.

Indiana Records on Beck Family from Augusta County, Va.

Beck's in the 1850  Census.

David's twin, Daniel.  For Jennings County, Indiana they have an Elizabeth
Beck listed as head of household, age 43, born in NC, then listed under her name as those living in same household were

 Daniel       age    52   Virginia
 Jacob           "     22     "    "
 Mary E or C "    21     "    "
 William         "    19      "    "
 Martha J       "    17
 John
 Franklin
 Nancy                 11
 Elizabeth C          9
NOTE:  Strange as the entry appears, this may be Daniel's wife, the former Elizabeth Kessler as his mother remained in Augusta County, Va. and is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census. In 1860, she is living in her son Jacob's home and is aged 80.  Daniel's sister Elizabeth married Henry Swink and lived in Ohio. Daniel's age may be a typo or Elizabeth or a neighbor may have given the census taker the information when he was not home. Census takers often consulted neighbors to avoid traveling  to another home.

ADDENDUM TO AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA RESEARCH

Washington Co., IA records:

The mystery of the missing death records of David Beck and his wife Nancy Henderson of Augusta County, Virginia surfaced rather easily after the death of their great, granddaughter, Florence (Snider) Bender.

When my mother Mrs. Florence (Snider) Bender died in February 1993, a myriad of old papers, photographs and old Bibles were found stored away in her attic that she had saved from my grandmother's estate (Mary Belle Jarrard Snider, granddaughter of Hugh Fulton and Mary Ann Beck). Under a pile of old Reader's Digests that nearly were thrown away was a photo of an older man and woman with a young child. Handwritten were the words.. ...Grandma and Grandpa Beck and Eddie Young, taken at Kalona, Ia 1874.

This is what Grandma and Grandpa Beck looked like:

Shortly thereafter, I turned my search to the northern part of the county and found the burial records of Grandma and Grandpa in the Grout Cemetery in Sharon Twp. near Hills, Ia. and also found the tombstone records of their daughter Elizabeth Young who apparently died in childbirth explaining the young three year old child, Eddie Young in the 1874 photo of his grandparents.

In 1994, I volunteered to index some old 1865 tax lists that had survived a trip to the city dump of old tax records. Some astute historian had salvaged them and taken them to their home. Unfortunately, many of the old lists are lost. I was somewhat disappointed to find Marion Twp. already done as that is where my family had lived. Taking one at random I ended up with Iowa, English River, and Lime Creek Twps. As I copied and typed these lists I was amazed to discover my lost ancestors, nothing less than fate, that of that stack of books, I had David Beck's tax records of 1865. Yes, he owned land in English River Twp, Washington County, Iowa  in 1865 and two of the entries had a notation (sold in 1966, taxes paid by J.H. Lewis).

From the ages of the children of Hugh Fulton, it seems apparent that they came to Iowa in 1857 after receiving the David Henderson bequest. Hugh Fulton had not struck out on his own, but rather came west with his in-laws as the result of that inherited land warrant.
