(WORK IN PROGRESS - PLEASE BE PATIENT)
If you persist in researching with only the name your
family used in later years, you will miss many important papers. It
is important to remember that the local residents in Virginia and the early
English did not pronounce the 3rd "r" in the Garrard/Jarrard name thus census
taker and court clerks often heard Jarrett not Jarrard. Also the Census takers
randomly interchanged the G and J as their mood struck them. It was not unusual
to find this name spelled several different ways in one document as they
covered all bases.
In the early primogeniture system, land automatically
was inherited by the eldest son if there was no will. Thus, if the older
children had already been provided for in the family account book kept by
the family, only the younger children are who have not received their portion
are named in the will.
Was there two men with the same name of Andrew in this area? A difference
of opinion is expressed with different researchers. Thus, we present all
the evidence and let you decide for yourself.
