Descendants of Andrew JARRARD
By Norma Jennings
(Other major contributors with branches descended from the Dils Family and the brothers of Thomas, Samuel and Joseph Jarrard of our Thomas Jarrard: Marilyn Gerrad Sichler, Donna Nicholson Hoagland, Tony Dils, Lisa Neff)
Generation No. 1
1. Andrew1 JARRARD (Source: Estate settlement of
Andrew Jarrard filed in Brooke Co., WEST Va..) was born Abt. 1740 in England,
and died Bef. 17 Jun 1807 in Washington Co., Pennsylvania. He married Widow Beal Unknown. We know our ancestor’s name was Andrew
Jarrard from his estate settlement in Brooke Co., West Virginia naming his
children.
Notes for Andrew
JARRARD:
Some of the earlier
published information has been disputed with the finding of two men of similar
names in the same area at the same time. Only five of those children have been
proved to be our family. Thus, we must disregard the will of Andrew Garrett as
another family has claimed him as a later Irish immigrant (1784) that has been
traced more fully with no connection to our family. We know our Andrew was here
as early as 1780.
Our family has always
used the J spelling of JARRARD but it has been occasionally found in court
records as JARRETT and a number of other variations.
New Jersey Records;
For research purposes
only, I will include what I have found on the New Jersey family. . It is likely that the JARRARD Family in
New Jersey are related to our family but we have no documentation to prove a
connection to our family beyond the
1780 entry in Sussex Co., Somerset, New Jersey where Andrew signed as a witness
to John Marlatt’s will. Oxford Twp.,

One of the Rev. John
Garrard's wives was said to have been Abigail Bull. Coincidentally, Andrew
JARRARD purchased Land in conjunction with the heirs of Gershom Buehl (Bull or
Beal) Handwriting was difficult to read.
Andrew JARRARD's eldest son was named
Thomas JARRARD. It was common practice
to name the eldest son after the father's father. Whether this was done is not
known but there was a Thomas JARRARD in Greenwich, Gloucester Co, New Jersey in
1753. An ad in the Pennsylvania gazette
mentions a servant John Hanglin, Irish Servant, age 26, as a runaway from
Patrick Porter in Chester Twp., Burlington Co., N.J. He had been in this country for 8 years, served his time with
Enoch Roberts and had since been a servant of Thomas JARRARD at Greenwich.
The estate settlement of Andrew "JARRETT" JARRARD contained
seven different spellings for the surname.
Residents of Greene Co., Pennsylvania told me in 1986 that the name JARRARD
was pronounced as JARRETT or Jarrott because the Englishmen did not pronounce the third
"r". Thus, recorders often spelled the name as it sounded. Also, the British at that time used a
"J" and "G" interchangeably. It is often difficult to
differentiate between a "J" and a "G" in these old
handwritten records as they are very similar in the old writing.
Note: Andrew JARRETT in the county of
Sussex, NJ was bound to Governor William Franklin (with others) on May 11,
1774. There are many such references regarding folks bound to the
Governor.
Note: In Orange County, NY the estates of
William Bull and Richard Gerrard are mentioned as adjacent to a lot that was
transferred on May 1, 1781.
On the 7 January 1781 the Regiment under
the command of Colonel Barnastor Tarleton was part of about 4,000 men who
accompanied General Cornwallis in his advance northward from Charleston. On 17
January 1781, Tarleton overtook the American force under General Daniel Morgan
at Cowpens where the Seventh Regiment was almost entirely captured.
Thus the men of the Seventh Regiment had
an opportunity to remain in the United States and there is evidence that a
great many of them did.
Our fully documented information begins
with the estate settlement of John Marlatt with Andrew JARRARD as a witness.
It has not been proved that our Andrew served in the Revolutionary War
but there is evidence that an Andrew Jarrard did serve. The following military information is
maintained for reference only but it leaves room for further study.
ANDREW JARRETT, BLW
#9704 - 100 - 7 July 1789
served as a private in
Proctor's Artillery in Pennsylvania Line
[ Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files, Vol. II, compiled by
Virgil D. WHITE, page 1824:]
Andrew JARRARD's military papers have
apparently been lost or remained in England as no further information on his
service record is available.
A Bounty Land Warrant #9704-100 was
issued 7/7/1789 to Andrew `JARRETT' of Pennsylvania for serving as a private in
Proctor's Artillery during the Revolutionary War. This warrant was issued 7/7/1789. Land transactions found in Ohio Co., West Virginia (later Brooke
Co.) involving Andrew JARRARD have his name spelled as Garrard, Jerrad, Jarard,
JARRETT and Jerratt. On May 3, 1790, a
land transaction was located for 132 acres on Tomlinson's Run between John and
Catharine Cowen and Alexander McCoy. It was witnessed by the signature of
Andrew Jerred
In Sussex Co, Somerset, New Jersey, on 10
August 1780, Andrew `JARRARD' signed as a witness to the will of John
Marlatt. Lydia Marlatt, wife of John
Marlatt, is thought to have been a sister to either Andrew JARRARD (or Andrew's
wife) It is believed that Andrew also had brothers, John and Thomas but this
has not been documented. In 1780,
Andrew JARRARD, was listed in the Hunterdon Co., "New Jersey
Ratables" for tax purposes. Also located in that tax list was Hans Wilhelm
Dils purported to be the father of Joseph Dilts who married Mary JARRARD,
daughter of Andrew JARRARD. In Hunterdon County we also find the Daniel and
Harmon Dilts families. Daniel's son
Daniel married Rebecca "Merlett" which may explain the Marlatt/JARRARD
connection indicated. The name John Marlatt E. District appears in the
"Old Empire Loyalists List" lending further credence that Andrew
JARRARD was a Loyalist during the Revolutionary War.
The will abstract says John Marlatt,
Mansfield, Woodhouse, Sussex Co., farmer.
His wife was Lydia and his children were John, Nathan, Joseph, Hannah,
Sarah, Lidia, Martha and Ann. Proved Sept 20, 1780. Executors William Kreelin
and Garret Rapalje. Witnesses: Andrew JARRARD, John Mitchel, Fredrick ______. On September 19, 1780, Inventory by Newbold
Wooston and Andrew JARRARD.
Joseph Marlatt was living next door to
Samuel "Gerard", Andrew's
son, in the Beaver Co., Pa. 1800
census.

By 1788, Samuel HULL and Joseph Diltz,
Andrew's son-in-law were selling 200 acres of land adjoining Daniel Ross, Wm.
Cowan and Andrew JARRARD indicating that Andrew had purchased or received land
in this area prior to this date.
Settlers often were in the territory staking out their claims several
years prior to the final surveying and warrant issued. William JARRARD
(Gorrall) also received land nearby in 1788.
From this point on we
do have documentation of our Andrew JARRARD.
On the 1800 tax list is an Andrew
JARRETT, Washington Co., Pennsylvania, (NOTE:
Andrew Garrett’s family claim this as their Andrew as well.) Across the county line nearby, Samuel and Thomas `Jerard' are listed in
Beaver Co., Pennsylvania, neighbors to Joseph Marlatt, who may have been the
son named in John Marlatt's will that Andrew witnessed. Relatives who were not named as direct heirs
frequently witnessed wills. Neither
Thomas nor his brother Samuel had a dwelling at the time the census was taken
in Brooke Co., West Virginia in 1810; where both were listed as heads of
households. In 1810, Thomas had one son
under ten and another male between 26-45 in his household, possibly one of his
younger brothers or perhaps a hired man.
Many people of this era lived in forts and went out during the day to
work the land and retired to the fort at eventide. Although the two known JARRETT (Garrard) Forts were in GREENE
County, Pennsylvania and Virginia, there was a closer fort, Fort Atkinson, where
they may have lived. By 1810, the ever changing dividing line of counties had
now separated the land of father and sons.
The local historian of the area assured me that Thomas and Samuel
probably had not moved, but that only the boundary line had changed.
In 1810 we find an Andrew JARRETT in
Washington County, Ohio but he was under 25 years old so this cannot be our
Andrew.
It took a personal trip to Pennsylvania
to document Andrew's relationship to Thomas JARRARD, who was living in St. Clair
Co., Ill. when he died in 1823. In the
Brooke Co., West Virginia courthouse entries of various spellings, Jarret,
Jarratt, Jerratt, Jerard, JARRARD, all listed together in the estate settlement
of a man named Andrew Jerrard (or Jerratt).
When a copy of that estate settlement was obtained, Thomas JARRARD, and
the names of his brothers and sister Mary were all recorded in the court
records as `heirs of their father Andrew Jerrard'.
It was not uncommon for children to
receive their inheritance at the time they married. Also, in the old English law, if no will was left, the landed
estate automatically descended to the eldest son. Usually, the paternal inheritance descended to the eldest son,
and the maternal dower to the second son.
Rights of ascension were still recognized in the early days of
liberation from British rule, and this tradition still stood if no will was
left. Thus, it was necessary to name the Younger er children if you wished them
to receive a portion. Land inherited
through a will bequest also did not require a deed transfer; therefore, we find
no actual deed transfers for some of these transactions.
On May 6, 1793, Andrew JARRARD had
purchased land in Washington Co. Pa., from the heirs of Duncan McGeehan. The
land transfer record in Washington Co., read -- Sarah McGeehon & Alexander
Rigth of Washington Co., Pa. to Andrew JARRARD of Ohio Co., Va. and the heirs
of Gershom Buell (?Sp. Bell, Bull or Beal ) for 75 pounds, two hundred acres on
the Waters of Tomlinson's Run in Ohio Co. joining Samuel Farnsworth, Wm.
Sunclair and John Cowen. Signed by Sarah McGeehon and Alexander Wright.
Witnesses Wm. Sutherland & Charles Pratyers. This leaves some speculation
as to why he made this distinction instead of saying wife or children. The heirs
of Duncan McGeehon transferred their remaining interest in this property to
Thomas JARRARD, 18 November 1816.
By virtue of a land office treasury
warrant No. 9452 originally issued the 30th day of November 1781, the land in
question was granted to Duncan McGeehan of Ohio County as an assignee of Henry
Magasson, assignee of John MaCune, assignee of James Galbraith, assignee of
Joseph Hood, who was assigned of Fortinacus Crutchfield, a certain tract or
parcel of land containing 400 acres bearing date the 2nd day of September 1785
lying and being in the county of Ohio, formerly Yohogania on Tomlinson's Run
adjoining the lands of Robert Barr, Hugh, William, and John Cowan..... These
multiple assignees show how easy it was to transfer these early warrants by
merely signing your name and giving the certificate to someone else in payment
of a debt of another nature. Nearly
four years had passed before it was actually redeemed for land. This also reaffirms that the Cowans and
Jarrards moved from N.J. to the new territory about the same time.
Thomas JARRETT paid Samuel, Joseph, and
Mary for real estate in 1809 & 1810.
This takes us to the heirs of Gershom Buell "Bull" and Duncan
McGeehon and the property that Andrew purchased specifically mentioning Gershom
Buell heirs.
In the court record between Joseph &
Rachel, Samuel & Ruth and Thomas, the name is spelled Jerratt. The Joseph & Mary Diltz transaction with
Thomas spelled Andrew's surname as Jerrard.
Finally, when all was done Thomas JARRETT transferred everything to the
proper spelling of his name JARRARD.
New Jersey can boast that she is the only
state in which every foot of soil obtained from the Indians was gained by fair
purchase and transfer. Perhaps that is
why we have no tales of horror in the early days that have been handed down as
local history.
Most of the lands were sold prior to the
1758 treaty with the Indians and at that time all their titles were
extinguished except for the right to fish in all bays and rivers south of the
Raritan and to HUNT on un-enclosed land.
3,000 acres were bought in Burlington for the resettlement of
Indians. About sixty Delaware Indians
were settled there and in 1802 were moved again to New York State. Several years later they and the remnants of
other tribes were again moved to a location on the Fox River in Wisconsin. In 1832
the N. J. legislature paid them $2,000 to relinquish their fishing and
hunting rights. We now see little or
nothing to remind us of these first settlers of West Amwell but we should think
of them every time we travel the Old York Road. It follows very much the same route that the Indians used
traveling from the Neshaminy in Pa. to their camps along the Raritan. The settlement at or near present day
Rocktown called WISHALMENSEY had a trail leading to the WICHCHEOKE CREEK and
that may have become the Rocktown-Sergeantsville Stockton Road. Old records show that the trails from the
south passed through or near Mount Airy going to Ringoes where trails from and
to the north crossed one another. York
Road was completed in and followed to a great extent the original Indian trail
Naraticong.
By reference to early records and maps we
can locate West Amwell of the present on early tracts bought by Winder,
"Stevenson", "Bull", Wheeler and Calow among others. These tracts were a part of 150,000 acres
bought from the Indians in 1703 for 700 pounds and sold in turn to various
proprietors. This was the beginning of
divisions and sub-divisions.

Notes for Nancy
JARRARD:
The Brooke Co. Virginia
marriage records have a Nancy JARRARD
marrying Robert Bailey on December 24, 1815.
The ADAMS County, Ohio records say they married December 26, 1816. It is
believed that the Brooke Co. Virginia records were misread in the transcribing
of the records. Robert Baily was living alone in the 1820 Monroe Co., Illinois
census. Robert Bailey purchased her
father's silver watch at his estate sale. He is buried in the Union Cemetery in
St. Clair County, Illinois. Robert married Mary Roach in 1821 and possibly Mary
Glass in 1845.

Bailey:
Robert Bailey married
Nancy JARRARD December 1816 in Highland County, Ohio. The Baileys and Jarrards
lived in Washington and Beaver Counties, Pennsylvania (not Virginia) and also
in Brooke Co., West Virginia before emigrating to ADAMS and Highland Counties,
Ohio. The area in Brooke County where they lived later became Hancock Co. It
was Wellsburg, not Wellsville as reported by some, where they lived. Thomas
JARRARD sold land to William Bailey for one dollar before they left to go to
Ohio. Robert Bailey also bought Thomas JARRARD's silver watch at his estate
sale in St. Clair County, Illinois. More on the JARRARD family on the website.
Robert Bailey married
Mary Ann Glass, widow, in St. Clair County, Illinois 03/03/1845. In the 1850
census we find Isaac Bailey, age 23 and Evan Bailey age 15, sons of Mary Roach.
We also find Joiner Glass, Female, 13 under Robert Bailey's name. Next door is
Matthew Bailey age 25, prob. another son of Robert. Matthew's spouse was Ruth
and they had one daughter Caroline, age 1 and Matthew's step brother William
Glass, age 15 living in their household. There may be older children that we
have missed.

Notes for Samuel Diltz:
DILLS, DILS, DILTZ,
JARRARD, STEPHENSON, STEVENSON posted by Toby Dills on Sunday, April 5, 1998
I am seeking information about Rachel M.
STEVENSON [STEPHENSON]. She was born about Sept. 16, 1803, and died June 16,
1864. She may have had a brothers or uncles named Mills, James and/or William
STEVENSON. Her husband was Samuel DILTZ [DILLS, DILS], who was born Sept. 1,
1794, and died Apr. 28, 1858, son of Joseph DILTZ and Mary JARRARD. Joseph and
Mary JARRARD Diltz removed from NJ to Harrison Co., KY, then to OH, ending up
in Champaign Co. of that state by 1820 where Samuel and Rachel raised a family
of eleven children. Samuel and Rachel were married in either KY, possibly
Harrison Co, or in OH. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated..
He moved from NJ to KY
[then VA], eventually to Harrison Co. (8), then to Warren Co., OH, in
1803 (1,2,8), and
finally to Champaign Co., OH, about 1808 or 1809 (1). He was born about the
right time to be the
Joseph, son of John W. [Johann Wilhelm] Dils as shown here (3,6). There is a
family tradition
however that he may have been born in Germany (4) and if so, he could also have
been, for instance, an
infant son of one of the three Dils families [Peter, Jacob, or Moritz Wilhelm]
who came on the ship
"Two Brothers", commanded by Thomas Arnot, which arrived in
Philadelphia
9/15/1752 from
Rotterdam by way of Cowes (5). Among the evidence linking Joseph Diltz to
Johann Wilhelm Dils is
the fact that in 1780 Hans Wilm. Dils and Andrew JARRARD, father of his wife,
are shown in the same
section of the Hunterdon Co., "New Jersey Ratables" for tax purposes
(7).
He was a farmer and
possibly a blacksmith.

"This Week's Personality"
by Einar J. Anderson
Following the
dedication of the new Frigidaire drinking fountain at
the Park Ridge School fo
r Girls by the local Kiwanis Club tonight,
Principal Lucille
Jobst will prese nt some of her talented students in a
musical and dramatic
program, slanted e specially for this annual ladies
night occasion.
During the war so many
teac hers left the school to join the Waves
and Wacs that it was
necessary to rely almost entirely upon homemakers in
the community, with
teaching experience, to serve in a part-time
capacity. Now the only teacher on the staff not livi
ng in Park Ridge is
the mathematics
teacher. With the adoption of this
polic y, Mrs. Jobst,
who was a history
teacher, was made principal. Miss Ethel
Bar ger was
made executive
director.
The enrollment at the
school, according to Mrs. Jobst, fluctuates
from month to month as
the girls return to their regu lar homes.
At
present, thirty-six
are attending the three-year accredited hi gh school,
five are at Maine, and
thirty-two are registered in the grammar sc hool.
All the girls live on
the campus in six cottages, staffed by housemoth ers.
TAUGHT AT CLINTON It wasn't difficult for Mrs. Jobst to take
up
teach ing after her
husband's death because she had been trained for the
profession and had
taught for two years at Clinton Community High School.
Mrs. Jobst (Lu cille
BARKER) was born in Sparta, Illinois.
Both of
her parents had been
sch ool teachers before their marriage, her father
later changing his
vocation to become a druggist. Her
paternal
grandfather was a
grandson of a colonial Mi nuteman and he himself a
lieutenant in the
Civil War. His mother was a Frenc h
woman from Acadia,
who was brought to the
English colonies when the British captured French
Canada and scattered
the inhabitants along the Eastern seabo ard.
At Sparta Township
High School, Lucille was active in sports, music,
dr amatics and in
writing for the school paper. After her
graduation, she
spent two years at
Knox, her mother's alma mater, and then completed her
work for the
Bechelor's Degree at the University of Illinois. This was
later suppleme nted by
graduate work at the University of Wisconsin.
HELPS AILING MOTHER
Her teaching career at Clinton was interrupted
by her mother's
illness. She retu rned to Sparta and
spent a year caring
for her mother,
working in the drug st ore and playing the pipe organ at
Sparta Presbyterian
Church.
The next miles tone in
her eventful life was her marriage to Chester
A. Jobst, a law
student whom she had met at the University of Illinois.
However, previous to
their marriage he had entered sales work and was
sales representative
of the Botany Worsted Mills. They moved
to Park
Ridge immediately
after the birth of thei r first child.
At the time of
Mr. Jobst's death in
1945, he was the manager of the Chicago Division of
American Asbestos
Products of Cleveland.
Mr. Jobs t had also
worked his hobby of coin collecting into a small
mail order busine ss
which Mrs. Jobst now carries on in her own name. Her
husband had among ot
her collections, a complete set of quarters from all
U.S. mints,
Philadelphia , Denver and San Francisco, valued at $400.
A NUMISMATIC Mrs. Jobst deals pr imarily in single and
uncirculated
coins and advertises
regularly in the Numismatic Magazine, coin
collectors'
publication. She has recently received
sev eral display boxes
of Irish coins
containing three gold coins, three silver c oins and a
small coin.
Our personality also
manages two farms, one which bel onged to her
mother and is operated
by a tenant near Macomb, and the other ne ar
Sparta, belonging to
her father. Mr. BARKER, who makes his
home with his
daughter at 501 S.
Clifton, was eighty-one years old last Friday.
Mrs. Jobst is an
active worker at the Park Ridge Methodist church.
She is a member of the

In Memoriam
Park Ridge Methodist
Church
"With the first
break of Thursday's dawn, the Angel of Death claimed onof
our most stalwart and
loyal members, Ch ester A. Jobst. He
waged a
valiant fight against
failing health for a number of years but through it
all proved the reality
of his faith in Jesus Christ. All that loving
hands and hearts could
do to alleviate his sufferings came from his wife,
Lucille, and three very
lovely daughters; Doris, Joan and Loui se.
We
expressed our last
tokens of admiration and affection in the Church,
which he always held
close to his heart, Saturday afternoon, November
17th. The utmost
sympathy and compassion of pastors and people are
extended this choice
