Mahlon worked as a Saddler in Belleville. He served in the Army as
a Private during the Mexican War 1846-1847, in
Company G of the 2nd Regiment of Illinois Foot Volunteers, under the
command of Captain Joseph Lemen. He was at the
Battle of Buena Vista, Mexico where American forces faced odds of 20,000
Mexican soldiers to the 4,000 American soldiers.
The American forces won the battle.
