Descendants of John Nash
by Norma Jennings
Updated May 22, 2004

For many years we have searched for the parentage of Lucretia Nash who married David Jennings. We only knew her brother John married Jane Boyle.  Information from the Claude Cline Journal has revealed another brother Thomas and a sister Letitia,

Speculation on the Nash family has now come to an end with the locating of the christening records of both Lucretia and Letitia Nash. In the St. James Parish records we find Lucresy Nash b. September 29, 1788.  This birth date matched the one we had for her. While the parents were not listed for Lucretia, they were listed for her sister Letitia in the Early Catholic Church Records showing she was the dau. of John and Ann Nash. Letitia (Latitia Nash, dau. of John and Ann)  was baptized  October 12, 1790 at the age of six weeks.  Thus we come up with an approximate date of  August 30-31, 1790 for Letitia or Letty as she was called. Source: Early Catholic Church records, Maryland, p. 91 and the  St. James Parish, Baltimore, Maryland 1787-1815.

Lucresy Nash (no parents)   St. James Parish Register, 1787-1815, Register of Births and Christenings, Page 14

Further research in those same Catholic Church Records gives us the marriage of John Nash and Ann Couch  July 3, 1783. Are there more older children? With five years between the marriage date and the birth of the oldest known child, it is likely that there is yet another child or two older than the ones we know.

The following is included for further research and elimination of family and non family members.

The 1810 census for German Twp. Fayette Co., Pennsylvania shows a John Nash over 45 and a Henry or Nathan Nash between 25 and 44. According to the journal of Claude Cline, the children were orphaned and scattered. Whether they were orphaned at a young age is not known. We now have birth dates for Lucretia, Thomas and John Nash and an approximate date for Letitia . The Westmoreland family of Richard Nash moved to Fayette Co., Indiana shortly after 1800. However, John, William and James Nash were still in Westmoreland County as late as 1810.

Much speculation is aroused by an entry found in the Pennsylvania Archives since we know that David Jennings II married Lucretia Nash.  How was Willam related to Lucretia?  An uncle perhaps as he was too old to be her brother and we now know he is not her father.  William Nash remained in Philadelphia.  He and his wife Sarah had a son, William  born 28 March 1760, Baptized 30 March 1760 and a son Joseph born 14 January 1762 and baptized  14 March 1762 (Records of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, City of York, York County, Pennsylvania, 1733-1800) Did they also raise a niece Lucretia Nash??? Her parents were still living until she was at lest seven years old when her youngest known brother was born.

David Jennings-William Nash, of Philadelphia - Westmoreland Co., Menallen Twp. 1783, cross indexed. David paid taxes 1786  (This David would have been Lucretia Nash's father-in-law as David Jennings II wasn't born until 1774 and would have been only 9 yrs. old).

William and Sarah Nash lived in York County, but William served in the Rev. War in the N. J. militia. Rejected pension records.

Sarah Nash, widow of William
State: Pennsylvania
Location: Philadelphia
Reason: Name not on the New Jersey rolls--no proof of service.

The earliest Nash and most likely candidate for John's father is  Thomas Nash located in the Maryland Colonial Census of 1776 :  i. e. NASH THOMAS
Place:           St.James Parish, Anne Arundel Co. Md.
                  Other Residents: 1 wh. woman, 2 wh.boys, 1 wh.girl

1800 Talbot Co., MD census 1 M ov 45; 1 F un 10 and 1 F 16-26

The fact that the first Thomas is listed in the same Parish as the John Nash and Ann Couch family that we have documented makes this feasable.

It is also recorded in the St. James Parish Register, 1787-1815, St. James Marriages, Page 1

A deposition by a Thomas Nash in Clark Co., Md states he is 62 yrs. old dated 20 October 1763 (b. ca. 1701)

Two oath of allegience records were found in Cecil Co., Md for a Thomas Nash 1776 and a John Nash 1778.  We need to be careful here as there are possibly two Thomas and John Nashes in the general area.

By 1790, both Thomas and John are listed in the Patapsco Lower Hundred, Baltimore, MD census records.  For a better understanding of the geographical makeup of this area  http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdbaltim/hundreds.html

Generation No. 1

1. John1 Nash, was born Abt. 1763 in Pennsylvania (or Maryland). He married Ann Couch July 03, 1783 in Early Catholic Church Records, Baltimore, MD. Notes for John Nash:

Claude Cline's Journal 1911: Early Records show two sons John and Thomas and a sister Letty Nash, Orphans were to drift. The sister accompanied a family to the west, possibly Indiana. Early history of the Nash family dates back to Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania home is unknown, but is probably near Uniontown.

Pa., and died May 23, 1851 in Uniontown, Menallen Twp. Fayette Co., Pa.  St. James Parish Register, 1787-1815, Register of Births and Christenings, Page 14

Different writers describe the areas somewhat differently due to the presence of multiple St. James churches tn both Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties. The first listed below is where we find Lucresy Nash's baptismal records. We find later Nash entries at St. John's. :

'Located on the border between Baltimore and Harford Counties in Maryland, St. James of My Lady's Manor was built in 1752 and became an independent parish in 1777. The records in this database were compiled by the Rev. John Coleman between 1787 and 1815. Information provided includes dates for births, baptisms, marriages, and deaths. In some cases location of residence is also given. With over 3200 names, this can be a helpful source of information to those researching ancestors from Maryland. Lucretia's birth records are found in the St. James Parish Register, 1787-1815'

St. James Parish Register 1787-1815 by Bill and Martha Reamy. St James is located at Monkton and was a chapel of ease for St. Johns Parish. (in-print)  This explains finding the Nash family in both St. James and St. John's Parish.

'In 1692 the Maryland Assembly passed an act establishing the Church of England as basically the state church and setup the establishment of Parish boundaries and establish vestries to support the church.  The parish was to keep a register of all the births, deaths, and marriages. These records provide a great deal of genealogical data available on late 17th and 18th century Anne Arundel County. It should also be noted that the Quakers also kept minutes of their meetings in which births, marriages and deaths were recorded. The Parishs for Anne Arundel County.'

'At that time St James Parish (also called Herring Creek Parish) took in all of Herring Creek Hundred and part of the West River Hundred. It basically took in the southern part of Anne Arundel County below West River and Muddy Creek. St James Church today is located on Rt 2. '

The Wise family is of Saxon Origin. They were in the west of England prior to the Norman Conquest of 1066. The first of the line to come to America was John Wise, who at the age of 18, left Gravesend, England and settled on Accomack Island, Virginia where the family lived for seven generations and they were involved in the military and political life of the area.

Had eleven children  From the Allen Co., Ohio History Book.

Lemuel Eversole, a prominent agriculturist of Jackson
township, residing on his farm in section 28, represents the sturdy,
independent spirit of our American manhood which has overcome all
obstacles encountered in the highways of life and has made our people
honored and respected among the nations of the world. Left an orphan in
early childhood, he has worked his way, unaided, to an independent
position. He is one of the large land-owners of Allen County, having
360 acres of well improved land, upon which he makes his home. Mr.
Eversole was born October 30, 1829, in Perry County, Ohio, and is a son
of Peter and Rebecca (Snyder) Eversole, being one of seven children that
grew to adult years, viz.: Eliza, Catherine, Francis, Nancy, Lemuel,
Rebecca and Daniel.

When our subject was a child of two years, his parents moved to
Sandusky County where they died four years later, in 1835, within a
month of each other. Left alone in the world, Lemuel was taken into the
home of his uncle, John Eversole, of Perry County, where he remained
until he was 17. Educational opportunities were meager and consisted of
a short term schooling each winter. He was apprenticed to learn the
carpenter's trade, and for the three years thus engaged was given his
clothes and $30. Within three months after his time had expired, he was
on his way to California to seek his fortune in the gold fields. During
the two years spent in mining and gold-
washing, he did not make a fortune and decided to return to his native
State. In the spring of 1852 he come to Allen County where he purchased
a tract of wild land and secured work for the winter in the cabinet-shop
of Musser & Winn, of Lima. For another six years he worked at his trade
in the eastern part of the county, living frugally and saving his
earnings so that he was able, by selling his first purchase, to buy his
present property. In 1872 he built a large, substantial bank barn, and
three years later his pleasant brick home, one of the most attractive in
the county.

He was married July 8, 1855, to Sarah Nash, who was born July 11,
1837, and was a daughter of Thomas and Rebecca (Akins) Nash, early
settlers of this county. They were the parents of 12 children, viz.:
George W., Eliza J., wife of L. B. Harrod; Frank J., John E., Charles
A., Elva C., Daniel B., Nettie B., Lemuel N., Aura D., Ralph and a child
that died in infancy. Mr. Eversole is a member of the Christian Church.
He is a Repubican and a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted as a
100 day man in May, 1864, in Company A, 151st Reg., Ohio Vol. Inf.,
under Captain King, of Delphos, with the rank of 2nd corporal. Mr.
Eversole is a prominent Odd Fellow. He has served as township trustee

wheel when the voice of duty called him.
