Generation No. 1
History shows BECKENBACHs' in the Darmstadt, Germany area in 1241. Darmstadt is about 35 miles
from the village of Eiterbach. Johann Adam died from an accident when he went to
get his children from a church festival in the village of Heddesbach. Johann's
widow left for America in 1751 with her 11 children. They arrived in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the ship 'Janet' on October 7, 1751. In Maryland, BECKENBACH
became BECKENBAUGH; in West Virginia, Pickenpaugh became the
preferred spelling; in Kentucky and Indiana, tne name was PECKINPAUGH; the ones
who lived for a time in Illinois used Peckenpaugh; and the ones who went on to
California in the 1850's made a change in the last syllable to become Peckinpahs.
No descendant of the family who arrived in 1751 retained the BECKENBACH spelling. The
BECKENBACHs' who arrived after 1800 seemed to have retained the BECKENBACH spelling.

were long negotiations; after which she paid 130 florins as a manumission fee
and 177 florins and an additional 30 florins to satisgy the ten Pfenning tax on
the value of what she took with her. Casper BECKENBACH, Georg Adam BECKENBACH, Georg Leonhardt BECKENBACH
all arrived on the ship Jane 7 October 1751.

The following obituary
for Abner ARRASMITH was found in the files of Alta ARRASMITH who was the wife of
Ernest ARRASMITH, son of George Washington ARRASMITH. It was sent to me by James

On Monday morning , at
six o'clock of cancer, at his late residence in this city (Olathe, Kansas) Hon.
Abner ARRASMITH, aged 72 years, six months and 10 days.
Mr. ARRASMITH was born
at Paris, Kentucky, July 9, 1812, and removed with his parents to Vermillion
County, Indiana, when 18 years of age ad from there to Richland Grove, Mercer
County, Illinois two years thereafter. He was married December 25th, 1831, to
Miss Elizabeth Pickenpaugh. After a
residence of two years at Richland Grove, he moved to Henry County, Iowa, and
from there to JOHNSON and Linn Counties of the same State. In the last named county he held the
office of Justice of the Peace in 1867. On the 31st day of January, 1868, his
wife died. In the fall of the same year he was elected to the State Senate and
served acceptably to his constituents and the people of the old State. On the
5th day of October, 1869, he was married to Mrs. Charlotte Kent, of Knox Co.,
Illinois. In 1857, he united with
the M.E. Church and remained a faithful and consistent member until death. He
removed to Olathe in 1882. He
leaves a widow and three sons; George, who resides in this county, Abner of
Republic County, and Wesley, who is living in Arkansas, and four daughters, Mrs.
Mathias Kershener, and Mrs. David Rogers of this county, Mrs. J.M. SMITH of Ft.
Scott and Mrs. S. A. Shepherd of Kinsley.
When near the approach
of death, Henry Vaughan, one of the purest of earth said: "Dear beauteous
death; the jewell of the just."
Such an excalmation
would have been equally as appropriate on Monday morning coming from the lips of
Mr. ARRASMITH, for he was "just" in all his thoughts and doings. He was a wise legislator, a Christian
gentleman, a friend to the friendless, a kind neighbor and in short an honest
man. The funeral services were held at the M.E. Church on Wednesday morning at
ll o'clock, Rev. A. S. Embree, the pastor, officiating.
