Abraham married 1) Rachel Freeland, born December 1809, died 23 August 1850, and was the daughter of John Freeland and Mary McCann.(1) Rachel died the 23 August 1850 and was buried in West Virginia before the family moved to Iowa. After Rachel's death, Abraham married 2) Catharine Francisco, the daughter of the Reverend John Francisco who possibly was a descendant of the great Indian fighter, Peter Francisco.
I was told by my great uncle Joseph Bertram Snider, that they went
to Wheeling, West Virginia and floated down the Ohio River to Iowa in 1857.
The obituary of Joseph M. Snider substantiates this date by saying they
came to Iowa when Joseph Marcellus Snider was only 16 years old. An old
family Bible in the possession of Abraham's daughter Elizabeth Hopping's
descendants gives information on the family of Abraham Snider and Rachel
Freeland(2) that can not be located any
where else. However, the Bible records ignores the second marriage and
the youngest child born to Catherine Francisco. This child subsequently
died at the age of twelve so has no descendants.

3. Abraham's children and their birthdates were all found in the family Bible of Elizabeth (Snider) Hopping.
4. Census records show no natural born children for John Snider. Apparently, the photo of John Snider's family in Terra Alta, West Virginia in the possession of Edna Bogner is either a nephew or cousin of the family. Or it may represent the children of a different name found in their care and listed as servants in the census records..
5. 5The son Abraham, Jr. was located in the 1860 census as the son of Abraham and Catharine (Francisco) Snider. The former Peggy Hopping now has the old family Bible of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (#12) (Snider) Hopping which gives the birth and death dates of the Abraham & Rachel (Freeland) Snider family. It is believed that Abraham, Jr. died when he was only twelve years old as casket records were located for Abraham on that date.
