Eldon
farmed and got a job loading
railroad cars at Buhner's Fertilizer Plant, on the East side of Seymour. He later went to work for Arvin Industries
in Seymour, makers of automobile mufflers and exhaust pipes. He became an inspector, and at different
times,
worked on both the muffler and pipe lines.
He retired from Arvins in 1974.
He
raised cattle and hogs most of the
time, but there were times when he also had ponies, goats, ducks,
turkeys,
rabbits, chickens and pigeons. Of
course, it goes without saying, that there were always dogs and cats
around. People always dump them in the
country and they go to a farm and take up residence, where they will be
fed
from time to time.
He
used to raise fox hounds and go fox
hunting. I remember a few nights when
he would load all of the family in the car and drive to a lane on Fred
Voelkson's place. (which is now part of
the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge)
We would get out of the car and Daddy would listen to the hounds
barking
as they trailed the foxes. Daddy would
tell us what was going on; "It
sounds like they're on a cold tral", or "They must have treed the
fox", or "It sounds like they're on a really hot trail and Old Yeller
is in the lead". (Old Yeller was a
homely looking dog of white, with yellow markings and just a few black
flecks. He looked like a white dog that
somebody had thrown up on, so we kids always called him Old Puke) We kids didn't find nearly as much enjoyment
in listening to the dogs as Daddy did, so we usually wound up catching
lightning bugs until Daddy decided to go home.
He
used to like to raise pigeons. He had
about 600 at one time. It was kind of neat
to see that many pigeons
circling our farm. Some were almost as
big as our Banty chickens, and some were very small and had feathers
sticking
out around their feet. The smaller ones
were tumblers. For some reason that is
unknown to me, those little pigeons would be flying along just fine,
then turn
a single or double summersalt in mid air.
Daddy was always building more pigeon nests and switching eggs
from one
nest to another, in hopes that the adoptive parents would be better
able to
raise the little pigeon to adulthood.
Many times, he would take the two eggs from a pair of wild
pigeons and
replace it with one egg from his giant sized pigeons, figuring that it
would
take both of them to feed the giant sized baby.

ROBISON, b. 1912; d. July 11,

Notes for LOUISE
ROBISON:
Louise lived very close to my mother's
house, in Geetingsville. One evening,
she came to visit, at my mother's house, while she waited for her date
to
arrive. My mom had to go to bed, but
louise visited with her parents in the yard.
Before long, Everett Burkhalter came to pick her up. She waved to him and said goodnight to my
grandparents. It was a warm Summer
night and my mom had her window up,
with a screen in it. Louise came to the
window and scratched on the screen, then said goodnight to my mom.
The next morning, a relative came to my
mom's house and told them that Louise and Everett had been killed the
night
before. They had car trouble and were
walking for help, when another motorist hit them. Louise
had been killed instantly, and Everett died soon
afterward.
Cousin Betty Peterson, daughter of
Esther June Robison, said that Louise's first name was Elizabeth.
Everett was the brother of Jeff
Burkhalter, who married Merle Colby, daughter of Rollo and Annis Colby.
