Sometime between 1817 and 1824, after his father's death, John's mother, Mary Elizabeth Ervin Baxter, together with John and his sister, Ann Marion, moved from Georgetown SC to Sumter District (now Sumter County) in the Williamsburg Township northwest of their original home on the coast. There, in 1824, Mary Elizabeth married Samuel Richbourg, a Huguenot. Samuel is probably a descendant of Claudius Richbourg who obtained grants of land in 1765 in Sumter County east of Wateree.
About 1832, still in the Sumter District, John married Sarah Caroline Flagler. "Caroline" was a very popular girls name in the Carolinas. Sarah was born circa 1813 in South Carolina and died in 1853 in Mississippi City, and was the daughter of John G. Flagler and Elizabeth White. On 2 March, 1835, Sarah C. Flagler Baxter sold 541 acres in Clarendon County on Georgetown Road. It was the estate of Elizabeth Flagler, her mother.
John was a respected man in his community. he preached in Methodist Churches, although there is no
