John's Name first appears in historical records in 1816 in connection with
two grants of land, totalling 1289 acres, in Chesterfield County, SC.
Bordering one of the grants of land are Hugh McKay, probably the father of
John's second wife, and Erasmus Powe, namesake of Erasmus Powe Ervin the
husband of John's daughter Mary Ann
John first bought land in Marlboro Cty in 1825 and he apparently spent the
rest of his life in Bennettsville
