Came to America in 1732 from Belfast, "beset by tempest, perils, and untold suffering and sickness: A son died in route. "Tarried in Charleston for recovery. Seven others died not many years after reaching Williamsburg Cty. The family settled first at the Kings Tree. The Irvines chose a bluff about a mile distant and set to work to fell the mighty trees and clear the undergrouth" (John Ervin Bible)
According to a Note from Elizabeth O'Leary, they James and Elizabeth had 14 Children, one died at Sea, Several more died after arriving at Charlestown in a "great mortality".

Catherine Elvira Tate: b) 9 April 1841 near Morganton, N.C. d 9 February 1918 Durham, N.C. while visiting her son Edward K. Powe dau of Dr. William Caldwell and Laura Theresa Wilson Tate of Morganton. She received her education in private schools at Morganton and Charlotte and at the famous old Nash and Killock School in Hillsboro, NC. She was a small woman and had red hair and blue eyes inherited from the Tate Family.
William Ellerbe Powe II, son of William Ellerbe and Elizabeth Sloan Torrence Powe b) 9 February 1829 Cheraw SC d) 26 January 1905 Morganton, NC. M) 2 April 1862: inherited 30 slaves and much land from his parents. He lived his early years near Salisbury, NC. He spent several years in New Mexico as secretary to governor Abram Rencher. After his return to NC, he assisted in building the Western North Carolina Railroad. He served as commissary sergeant at the Confederate prison in Salisbury. In 1869, he moved to Morganton, NC and remained there the rest of his life. He was a farmer by vocation but was frequently in public life, being mayor for several terms. He was an acknowledged leader in civic life and worked for an adequate public school system in Morganton. They were members of the Episcopal Church and are buried in the churchyard of Grace Episcopal Church.
