DRAFT
JOHN EADES
Captain John Eades was born April 17, 1772 in Virginia and died April 20, 1839 in Mobile AL. His father, John Eades SR, was born March 16, 1750 in Ireland and died in 1790 in Georgia. In 1776, he was living in Virginia and fought there in the Revolutionary War. Soon afterwards he and his family moved to Georgia. His son, Captain John Eades, operated a farm, a saw mill and a cotton gin, on Uchee Creek, Washington County, GA.
In 1802, Captain Eades married Jane (Jennie) Fee in Augusta, GA. She was born 1781 in County Armagh, Ireland, and died July 27, 1830, in Wilcox County, AL. Her father, William Fee, was born 1755 in Ireland. Her mother, Jane Ervin, was also born in Ireland.
Their children were:
1. Mary Ann Eades, who was born March 17, 1800, in Columbia County, GA, died on August 21, 1831 in Camden, AL. She was married thrice with her first two husbands dying. She was first married to George Gullett. The two children from this union were John Eades Gullett, born August 20, 1816, and George Samuel Gullett, born 1818. Her second marriage was to Samuel Ervin on July 11, 1820. The child from this union was Robert Hugh Ervin, born September 11, 1822. Her third marriage was to Squire G. Grayson on April 9, 1825. The only known children from this union were William Grayson, Margaret Jane Grayson, and an infant who died young. At the death of Mary Ann Gullett Ervin Grayson, their grandfather, Captain John Eades, raised her children John Eades Gullett and George Samuel Gullett.
2. Margaret Ervin Eades, who was born about 1804, in Columbia County, GA. She died June 1890 in Mobile, AL. In 1818, she first married Robert M. Hailes, who was born in South Carolinan in 1794. He died in Wilcox County in 1831. She next married Jeremiah (Jere) Austill on October 9, 1834 in Wilcox County, AL.
In 1811, Captain Eades, and his family, his brother Daniel and his family, and his brother in law Samuel Fee and his family, moved from Georgia, through the Indian Nations to Baldwin County, Mississippi Territory, now Mobile and Washington County. There, Captain Eades established a plantation on the banks of the Tombigbee River. His brother in law, Samuel Fee and his future son in law, George Gullett, also established plantations in the same vicinity. Eades also established a plantation in Clarke County, adjacent to the property of Evan Austill, whose son Jeremiah (Jere), would later marry his daughter Margaret. A neighbor in Baldwin County, Samuel Ervin, would also later marry his daughter Mary Ann. Captain Eades also located a trading post at Carney's Bluff on the Tombigbee River, and with George Gullett, brought merchandise by schooner from Eastern seaboard cities to Mobile, and on up the rivers to trading posts as far as the future site of Montgomery and Wetumpta. He was a member of the firm of Eades and Gullett which operated the first store in Montomery.
By 1820, he had sold his property in Baldwin County, and moved to Wilcox County, where he operated a large plantation at Coal Bluff. He also continued to operate his plantation in Clark County. His widowed daughter Mary Ann Eades Gullett and her two sons, accompanied him to Coal Bluff.
