TEXT:
State of Indiana
County of Starke } ss.
On this thirtieth day of July A.D. One thousand eight hundred and seventy eight, personally appeared before me Clerk of the Starke Circuit Court, within and for the County and State aforesaid John E. Short aged 41 years and Wingate Prettyman aged 66 years, residents of the town of Knox, County of Starke and State of Indiana, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me duly sworn, say they were well acquainted with Mathias Hepner, who was a soldier in the war of 1812, in a New Jersey regiment which was commanded by Colonel Winfield Scott, and that they know that the said Mathias Hepner died at the County of Starke and State of Indiana, on the 23rd day of December A.D. 1859, and they further say, that they are able to make this affidavit from the fact that at the time of the death of the said Mathias Hepner they resided in his immediate neighborhood and attended his funeral and saw him buried, that the said funeral attra[c]ted a great deal of attention from the fact that said Mathias Hepner was well known as an old soldier, this distinctly impressing upon their minds the date of his death, and they further say that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.
[signed] John. E. Short
[signed] Wingate Prettyman
Sworn to and subscribeed before me this 30th day of July A.D. 1878 and I hereby certify that the contents of the foregoing affidavit were fully made known [carat insert] and explained [end carat insert] to the witnesses before swearing and that I have no interest direct, or indirect in the prosecution of this claim.
[signed] Matthias T. Hepner Clerk
of the Starke County Circuit Court
