GENERAL AFFIDAVIT.
-------------------------------
State of Indiana, County of Starke, ss:
In the matter of Pension Invalid Claim Certificate No. 362.802 of Matthias T. Hepner, Co. D., 29 Reg't Ind. Volunteers.
Personally came before me, a Circuit Clerk in and for the aforesaid County and State, William C. Spoor, aged 61 years, a citizen of Knox, Indiana, No. [blank] Street, County of Starke State of Indiana, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit and who, being duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid case as follows:
I was personally acquainted with claimant Matthias T. Hepner prior to his enlistment in the U. S. Army in 1861 and Know that at the date of his enlistment he was a sound able bodied man.
When he returned home in July 1862 he was brought to my father's home in Starke County Indiana. This was immediately after his discharge, within two or three days after his discharge at which time the claimant was sick with diarrhoea, and suffering very much with it. He came home helpless and could not wait upon himself. At this time said Claimant was suffering with rheumatism and limped badly when he tried to walk or support himself on his legs. He, said claimant, was confined to his bed for about two months immediately after his discharge. He then became better and went away from my father's house and lived within one mile of affiant for two years, and then within two miles for three years, and within five miles from said last mentioned time to the present, and I have seen claimant on an average at least once each week from the time he first came to my father's sick in July 1862 to the present time, and from my acquaintance with him and seeing him as aforesaid I Know that said claimant has continuously suffered with diarrhoea and rheumatism since the date of his discharge to the present time. He, claimant is not now able to perform any manual labor although he tries to do a little light work to make a living. For the last ten years claimant has not been able to perform more than one fourth the labor of an ordinary person but at present is wholly disabled to perform any manual labor.
He further declares that he has no interest in said case, and is not concerned in its Prosecution.
Attest, when the affiant signs BY MARK, two persons.
