Subject: Fw: Fay Thompson also a BASTIN descendant

Greetings!

The following message is forwarded by permission of Patty Black, who, as it
turns out, is a double cousin to many of us on the BASTIN-L list! It is
fascinating when tracing our family when these multiple kinship connections
appear! (Patty is now on our BASTIN-L list, so she will receive any
followups to this discussion that are sent to the list. And, Patty, YES it
is IMPORTANT to clear up this additional descent; thanks! :-)

As it turns out, my own grandfather BASTIN was a cousin to my grandmother
BASTIN, his wife. They were 7th cousins, once removed, with a common
ancestral connection from back in the 1700's in Virginia. To the best of
knowledge, though, they never knew they were related, and both had already
died before this connection turned up. It is said, however, that EVERYONE
with English ancestry is related to EVERYONE ELSE with English ancestry at a
maximum difference of 17th cousins or less. (It is a small island, after
all!) Incidentally, the heavy migration to North America from England often
resulted from the practice of primogeniture. In England, only the eldest
son inherited the land, money, title, etc., from the estate of the father.
The younger siblings, although considered of equal social standing,
inherited nothing. The result was many of them often came to America,
especially to Virginia, in search of economic opportunities in the 18th
Century :-)
