Welcome to the BASTIN-L List, Brian!

As it turns out, your query apparently connects with another branch of my
own family tree, but it is another connection through the BASTIN family! I
don't have any information on the Cora Bastin identified in your query, at
least not yet. But, Joshua Akin Young is a cousin of mine through the ENNIS
family -- Most interesting! Here's the information I have in my database on
this family, with the other connections to the BASTIN family shown as
follows:

Subject: BASTINs and Relatives in 1840 Barren Co, KY Census

Janet Cochran asked a couple of days ago if I would list the US Census
records for John Bastin showing him in Barren County, KY in the 1840 US
Census. Fortunately, I do have a photostatic copy made of the pertinent
pages from the microfilm taken of these records that I made in Orlando,
FL. This is an important census, for it provides considerable information
on several of our family members just before their migrations from
Kentucky to Indiana, Missouri, and Kansas. The following names are listed
in the order they were tabulated on the census, and in several cases, are
actually listed one after the other, implying that they were neighbors on
adjoining farms!

1840 US Census, east Barren Co. KY

John Bastin
1 male under 5 (Grandson? Thomas F. Bastin b. 1838 or John Emery Bastin
b.1839?)
1 male 60 and under 70 (This fits with John's b. ~1775)
1 female 20 and under 30 (John's second wife, Margaret Keath, b. abt
1815)

John moved from Pulaski County, KY where he is listed in the 1830 Census.
He would move within about 18 months after the 1840 Census from Barren
County, KY to Indiana. John Emery Bastin is known to have been born in
Adair County, KY. The area where the Bastin family lived was in East
Barren Co, KY within about 2 miles from where Adair Co, Hart Co, and Green
Co intersected. In 1860, this area would be carved off to form the new
county of Metcalfe as a result of a dispute over where a railroad should
be built.

Wm. H. Nunn
1 male under 5
1 male 5 and under 10
1 male 30 and under 40
2 females 5 and under 10
1 female 30 and under 40

William H. Nunn's first wife was Hannah Bastin, daughter of Thomas Bastin
Jr. and Mary W. 'Nancy' Atwell Bastin, and grand-daughter of Thomas and
Hannah Brockman Bastin. Hannah would die within about 4 years of this
census, probably of childbirth complications from giving birth to Lucinda
Katherine Nunn, b. 26 Dec 1844. William H. Nunn would re-marry on 22 Dec
1845, after waiting the respectable one year after Hannah's death.

Richard H. Atwell
1 male under 5
2 males 5 and under 10
1 male 20 and under 30
1 female under 5
1 female 20 and under 30

Richard H. Atwell was the husband of Martha B. 'Patsy' Bastin, daughter of
Thomas Bastin, Jr. and Mary W. 'Nancy' Atwell, and grand-daughter of
Thomas Bastin and Hannah Brockman Bastin and also a grand-daughter of John
Atwell Sr. and Elizabeth ??? Atwell.

Richard H. Atwell was the son of John 'Jack' Atwell, Jr. and ???, and the
grandson of John Atwell Sr. and Elizabeth ???. Hence, Richard and Patsy
were first cousins. Richard and Patsy went to Missouri after 1850.
Richard would die in Miller Co, MO in 1853. Patsy would re-marry on 16
Apr 1854 in Miller Co, MO, to a Thomas Reed.

Ann W. Carver
2 females under 5
2 females 5 and under 10
1 female 30 and under 40

Ann Wayson 'Nancy' Bastin Carver was a widow. Her husband, Benjamin
Flutcher Carver, died Bet. 1836 - 1840. Ann was the daughter of Thomas
Bastin, Jr. and Mary W. 'Nancy' Atwell, and the grand-daughter of Thomas
and Hannah Brockman Bastin. The two females under 5 are the twins,
Cassandra Jane Carver and Lucinda J. 'Cindy' Carver, both born on 21 Apr
1836. The two females 5-10 are Elizabeth 'Betsy' Carver, b. 09 Nov 1833,
and another sister, probably older, whose name is unknown. Ann and
Benjamin Flutcher Carver were married on 15 May 1830 in Caswell Co, NC,
about 6 months before the traditional date recorded for the family's
migration over the mountains from Caswell County, NC to east Barren
County, KY.

Major B. Bastin
1 male under 5
1 male 20 and under 30
1 female 20 and under 30

Major Brockman Bastin b. 12 Jul 1813 in Caswell Co, NC was a son of Thomas
Bastin, Jr. and Mary W. 'Nancy' Atwell Bastin. He married Sarah Jane
Pointer b. 05 Jun 1818 in Dec 1838 in neighboring Hart Co, KY. They would
move to Miami Co, KS just before the War Between The States.

Thomas Bastin
1 male 20 and under 30
1 male 50 and under 60
1 female 50 and under 60

This was Thomas Bastin, Jr, b. 06 Feb 1783 and his wife Mary W. 'Nancy'
Atwell Bastin b. 17 Nov 1780 in MD. The male 20 and under 30 was
evidently their son Thomas 'Tommie' Bastin, III, b. 07 Apr 1818 in
Caswell Co, NC. He would marry Louanna 'Annie' Shofner very shortly after
the census was taken, on 22 Oct 1840 (marriage bond dtd. 19 Oct 1840, Hart
Co, KY.). Tommie would also later lose an arm to cannon fire south of
Atlanta at Jonesboro, GA while serving under Major General William
Tecumseh Sherman on the day Atlanta is taken, in the USA 21st KY Volunteer
Infantry.

William Atwell
1 male 5 and under 10
1 male 10 and under 15
1 male 30 and under 40
1 female under 5
1 female 5 and under 10
1 female 10 and under 15
1 female 30 and under 40

This was evidently William Atwell b. 16 Aug 1800 and his wife Hester
'Hettie' McCarty b. Abt. 1804. William was a son of John 'Jack' Atwell,
Jr. and ??? ???, and hence a nephew of Thomas Bastin Jr. and Mary W.
Atwell Bastin. (Jack and Mary were brother and sister.)

John Brockman
1 male 20 and under 30
1 male 40 and under 50
2 females under 5
1 female 5 and under 10
2 females 15 and under 20
1 female 20 and under 30
1 female 40 and under 50

This was evidently the Rev. John Brockman b. 08 Apr 1795 Albemarle Co, VA.
He was married to Marie (Moriah) Watson b. 1797. John's parents were
Ambrose Brockman and Nancy Simms. Ambrose Brockman was a brother to
Hannah Brockman, wife of Thomas Bastin, according to a letter written in
1934 between two relatives.

Incidentally, the census taker for the 1840 E. Barren Co, KY Census was
Isham Hardy, my 4th great grandfather, and if I do say so myself, he wrote
with a very fine hand :-)

Gary Lee Bastin (me) == Christine Marie Darnofall
James Glen Bastin == Edith Argent Presley
James Cordis Bastin == Ilene Dawson Waddell
James Thomas Bastin == Nancy Eugenia 'Jennie' Smith
David Walker Smith, Jr. == Lieuann Katherine 'Kate' Hardy
William George Hardy == Anne Taylor 'Annie' Wren
Isham Peter Hardy == Mary 'Polly' Snead (1st wife)

Another son of Isham Hardy was James Greene Hardy, Lt. Governor of
Kentucky at the time of his death in Glasgow, KY. He was a member of the
Know Nothing Party, a short-lived party that sprang up just before The War
Between the States in the late 1850's in an attempt to prevent the war.
When asked of their stand on any issue, their standard reply was they
would study the issue dearly if elected and resolve it as it needed to be
resolved :-) David Walker Smith and Lieuann Katherine Hardy had five
children that married BASTINs. Hence, most of the BASTINs of Hart,
